BELL TIED FOR FIRST, MEN'S GOLF FOURTH AFTER FIRST ROUND OF BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — Freshman Riley Bell shot a 3-under par round of 69 and the Sacramento State men's golf team is within striking distance of the lead after the first day of the Big Sky Conference Championship at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Bell is tied for the individual lead along with Big Sky Player of the Year Joshua Metz of Northern Colorado and Hartford's Elias Gross. The freshman made his biggest move over the last six holes as he birdied the par-5 13th, parred No. 14 and birdied the par-4 15th. He closed with birdies on the par-5 16th and par-4 18th along with a par on No. 17. Bell bogeyed two of his first four holes before falling back to event with birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-4 seventh. He made the turn at 1-over after bogey on No. 9 before catching fire on the back nine.

His performance helped the Hornets shoot 289 to finish at 1-over par during the round. That score places the team in fourth place, four strokes behind Northern Colorado for the team lead. Hartford and Southern Utah are tied for second place at even par.

Josh Diaz ranks second on the team and is tied for ninth overall with an even-par round of 72. Diaz got off to a quick start with a birdie on the par-4 first. He moved to 2-under four holes later with a birdie on the par-5 fifth. He remained at 2-under until bogeys on the par-4 10th and 15th returned him to even.

Freshman Ethan Davidson is tied for 12th place at 73. Davidson was even on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 and bogeys on Nos. 1 and 8. He was 1-over before an eagle on the 579-yard, par-5 13th. A birdie on the par-4 15th dropped him to 2-under but that was immediately followed by a double bogey on the par-5 16th and a bogey on 17.

Jeff Carr and Joe Fowler completed the lineup with rounds of 75 and are tied for 20th. Carr played his first nine holes even with a pair of birdies and bogeys. He parred his first four holes on the back nine but ended with bogeys on three of the last five holes. Fowler was 6-over through seven holes but rebounded by playing his final 11 holes at 3-under. He started the streak with a birdie on the par-3 eighth to make the turn at 5-under. On the back nine, he had birdies on the par-4 11th and par-5 16th along with seven pars.
