BELL SHOOTS 70 TO PACE MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND ROUND OF EL MACERO CLASSIC

DAVIS, Calif. — For the second consecutive day, the Sacramento State men's golf team was led by a freshman at the El Macero Classic. On Saturday, Riley Bell led the team with a 2-under par round of 70. Bell's performance helped the Hornets improved their score by 17 strokes from the first round.

Sacramento State remained in 14th place but drew closer to the rest of the field. The Hornets will enter the third round eight strokes behind Washington State. Texas Tech, which is ranked 10th nationally, took over the team lead after finishing the day 14-under par. The Red Raiders lead Cal State Fullerton by two strokes for the team lead.

Bell was never over par during the second round. He started with a par on the first hole and then eagled the 540-yard par-5 second. After a bogey on No. 3, he added three straight pars before placing birdies on both sides of a bogey on No. 8. He made the turn at 2-under and remained there until a bogey on the par-4 13th. He immediately returned to 2-under with a birdie on the par-4 14th and finished there following a bogey on No. 17 and a birdie on the par-5 18th.

The Hornets' team score was completed with rounds of 76 from Jeff Carr, Eric Olsem and Ethan Davidson. Carr also eagled the second hole which led to the team's five members playing the hole at 5-under during the day. He was even midway through his round but played the back nine at 4-over with bogeys on Nos. 10, 13, 17 and 18.

Olsem was 2-over on both sides of the course. He had a birdie on the par-5 fifth along with three bogeys on the front nine. He moved to 5-over following a double bogey on No. 10 and a bogey on 11. From there, he played his final seven holes at 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 14th and six pars.

Davidson, who led the team on Friday, had six pars and three bogeys over the first nine holes. He also moved to 5-over with bogeys on Nos. 10 and 13 before closing with four pars and a birdie on the par-3 16th.

Josh Diaz added around of 80 and Christian James shot 85 while playing as an individual on Saturday. Diaz's round was highlighted by birdies on the par-5 second and 15th holes.
