DAVIDSON LEADS MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND OF EL MACERO CLASSIC

DAVIS, Calif. — Freshman Ethan Davidson led the Sacramento State men's golf team in the first round of the El Macero Classic on Friday. Davidson shot 76 and is tied for 36th place while the Hornets finished with a total of 315 and are in 14th place.

Davidson was the first Sacramento State golfer off the 10th tee during the morning. He opened with a bogey but followed with a birdie on the par-4 11th. A pair of double bogeys took him to 4-over through eight holes but he made the turn at 3-over following a birdie on the par-5 18th. Davidson parred eight of the nine holes on the front side of the course with the exception being a bogey on the par-3 seventh.

Josh Diaz was one stroke back of Davidson and is tied for 47th place. Diaz bogeyed three of his first four holes before rebounding with birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 15th. A double bogey on No. 1 and three bogeys jumped him to 6-over but he ended his round by playing his final three holes at 1-under with par-par-birdie.

Jeff Carr overcame three bogeys on his first five holes to eventually stand at 1-over through 10 holes. Carr birdied the par-4 17th, saved par on No. 18 and then birdied the par-4 first after landing his approach shot within a foot of the flag. However, his momentum was halted with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3 and he added a pair of double bogeys and a bogey over his last five holes. Carr's round of 80 ties him for 67th place.

Eric Olsem shot 82 for the final score toward the team total. Olsem was 8-over through his first seven holes before a birdie on the par-4 17th. He parred seven of his next eight holes before closing with bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9. Riley Bell completed the lineup with a round of 84. The freshman had four birdies, eight bogeys, two double bogeys and a quadruple bogey in the round. His four birdies o the par-4 11th, 14th and first as well as the par-5 second were the most among the team during the round.

Sacramento State was also represented by Christian James who competed as an individual. The sophomore shot 2-over par 74 and is tied for 18th place.

The Hornets will start the second round at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
