TACOMA, Wash. — Jeff Carr shot 68 in the morning and an even-par 71 in the afternoon to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team during the first day of the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational on Monday at Chambers Bay.

The Hornets were 2-under par as a team during the first day and are tied for 10th place. UCLA is 31-under and holds a four strokes lead over Fresno State atop the team standings. Sacramento State leads a trio of Big Sky Conference schools as the Hornets have a one-stroke edge over Northern Colorado and Idaho heading into the final round.

Carr started his day on the 15th hole and was 1-over following a bogey on the 17th. He then started a streak where he played holes Nos. 1-12 at 6-under. The run began with an eagle on the par-5 first and continued with birdies on Nos. 4, 8, 10 and 12. He finished the first round at 3-under after bogeys on the par-4 13th and 14th.

He tied for the team lead in the second round with three birdies and three bogeys. He again started strong, birdying the par-3 15th, par-5 18th and No. 1 to begin 3-under. He was 3-over three rest of the way with bogeys on the par-4 fourth, seventh and 11th. Carr is tied for 20th overall.

Riley Bell shot 69-71 and is tied for 30th. He parred his first nine holes before dropping to 2-under with birdies on the par-5 eighth and par-3 ninth. A birdie on the par-4 11th took him to 3-under before a bogey on No. 13 and pars on four of his final five holes closed his round. In the second round, the freshman placed birdies around a bogey on holes Nos. 18-2 and added a birdie on the fifth to stand at 2-under. He returned to even following a pair of bogeys but moved back to the red with birdies on the par-4 11th and 12th. Bell closed his round with bogeys on two of his final four holes.

Josh Diaz ranks third on the team and is tied for 50th after shooting 71-72. Diaz was 3-under through his first nine holes before playing his final nine at 3-over in the first round. His second round began with a bogey on the par-5 18th but saw him birdie the par-5 first and par-4 sixth to move to 1-under. A double bogey on No. 11 and a bogey on No. 12 brought him to 2-over but he played his final five holes at 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 16th.

Landon Azevedo and Joe Fowler each had a round count towards the team total. Fowler was even in the first round before shooting 77 in the afternoon. He bogeyed the Nos. 5 and 6 before answering with birdies on the par-4 seventh and 12th. Azevedo shot 73 in both rounds. His first round was comprised of five birdies and seven bogeys. He had two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in the second round.

Sacramento State will be paired with Indiana, UC Irvine and Northern Colorado in the third round on Tuesday. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
