MEN'S GOLF FINISHES THIRD AT CAL POLY MATCH PLAY WITH WIN OVER UTAH STATE

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team finished in third place at the Cal Poly Match Play following a 3-2 win over Utah State on Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course. The team earned wins from Josh Diaz, Joe Fowler and Landon Azevedo during the final day and concluded the tournament with a 2-1 overall record.

Azevedo remained unbeaten in the event with a convincing 6&5 victory over Colten Cordingley. Azevedo never trailed during the round and was only all square on two occasions. He captured the first hole and then put the match out of reach with wins on Nos. 7-10 to go 5-up. Azevedo pushed his advantage to 6-up with a birdie on No. 13 and ended the match.

Diaz won 6&4 over Chase Lansford. The junior won the first two holes and five of the first six to take control of the match. Diaz made the turn at 5-up and added a win on the 10th hole. Lansford only win came on the par-5 13th but Diaz immediately answered by capturing the 14th to close out the match.

Fowler gave the team a 4&3 win over Cameron Tucker to guarantee the Hornet victory. Fowler never trailed in the contest and made his push with wins on Nos. 5, 7 and 8 to go 3-up early in the round. After Tucker drew back within one, Fowler stretched his lead with wins on the 12th, 14th and 15th holes.

In the other two matches, Jeff Carr fell to Andy Hess, 3&2, and Riley Bell was topped by Hayden Eckert, 2&3. Carr halved the first three holes of his match and was 1-down at the turn. Hess won on the 11th and 12th holes and pair halved the next four holes to give Hess the win. Bell led for most of the front nine and held a 2-up advantage midway through the round. Eckert responded with wins on the par-4 10th and squared the match with a win on No. 12. He took his first lead after the 14th hole and added a victory on No. 15.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Redhawks Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash. The tournament will mark the second time the Hornets have competed at a former US Open course (The Olympic Club) this spring.
