MEN'S GOLF SPLITS PAIR AT CAL POLY MATCH PLAY ON MONDAY

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team split a pair of matches during the first day of Cal Poly Match Play tournament on Monday at Cypress Ridge Golf Club. The Hornets started the day with a 3.5-1.5 win over host Cal Poly before falling to top-seeded UC Santa Barbara by the same score in the semifinals. The team will take on Utah State in the third-place match on Tuesday.

Landon Azevedo and Riley Bell each rolled to easy 5&4 wins against Cal Poly. Bell won five holes against Sage Casaga to put the match away. Azevedo picked up wins on three of his final four holes to earn the second win for the team.

The third win for the team came from Joe Fowler who defeated Peter Faragia, 1-up. Fowler was 2-down through 12 holes and split the next five holes. Jeff Carr halved him match with Thomas Lehman to give the team its 3.5 points.

In the semifinals, Azevedo earned the team's lone victory with a 3&2 decision over Justin Sheparovich. Azevedo was 1-down through eight holes but drew all square after a win on No. 9. He took his first lead on No. 11 but Sheparovich squared the match on No. 12. Azevedo earned his second win of the day with wins on Nos. 14 and 15.

Carr halved his match for the second time. He was 2-down at two points of the match against Zach Smith. He pulled within one with a birdie on No. 15 and then topped Smith on No. 18.
