PHOENIX, Ariz. — Josh Diaz and Jeff Carr each shot a 1-over par round of 72 during the third round of the GCU Invitational on Saturday. The scores were were the lowest posted by a Sacramento State men's golfer in the three-round event.
The Hornets finished in 16th place after shooting 289-297-293-879. UMKC continued to pull away from the field, building on their first-day lead and winning the event by 14 strokes. The Roos finished at 23-under par and were trailed by UT Rio Grande Valley (9-under). UTEP and Missouri tied for third at 8-under.
Carr had an up-and-down third round which saw him tie for the team lead with four birdies but also had a pair of double bogeys. He opened play with a birdie on the par-4 seventh and added four pars. Consecutive double bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 as well as a bogey on the par-4 15th took him to 4-over par. He began to chip away at that number with birdies on the par-4 17th and par-5 18th. He then parred the next five holes and ended with a birdie on the par-4 sixth.
DIaz parred his first five holes (Nos. 10-14) and fell to 1-under with a birdie on par-4 15th. He made the turn at 1-under following a bogey on 17 and a birdie on 18. He was 2-over on the front side of the course with birdies on Nos. 3 and 7 and bogeys on Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6.
Christian James had the highest overall finish on the team, tying for 66th place. James shot 74 during the third round which was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 17th and 13 pars. He started on the ninth hole with a bogey but was even at the midway point of his round following the birdie on 17. He had a bogey on the par-3 second and a double bogey on the par-4 sixth on his final nine.
Eric Olsem shot 75 on Saturday and finished tied for 75th. Olsem matched Carr and Diaz for the team lead with four birdies but also had six bogeys and a double bogey. Ethan Davidson rounded out the lineup with a 76. He had three birdies, two bogeys and three double bogeys.
Sacramento State will close out the month at the Cal Poly Match Play on March 25-26.
