PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Sacramento State men's golf team opened play at the GCU Invitational on Saturday at Grand Canyon. The tournament was halted by darkness with two groups left on the course and will continue withe conclusion of the second round and the final round on Saturday.

Sacramento State was 5-over par as a team in the first round with Ethan Davidson shooting par, Christian James posting a score of 72 and Eric Olsem and Josh Diaz each adding a 73. Davidson was never above par in the first round. He birdied his second hole (No. 10) and dropped to 2-under with a birdie on the par-4 14th. After two bogeys took him back to even, he birdied the par-5 18th. He remained 1-under through 14 holes but bogeyed the par-4 fifth  to finish even.

James posted his lowest round in his brief Hornet career, finishing at 1-over par in the first round. He opened with bogey-birdie-double bogey but added a birdie on the par-4 14th and stayed at 1-over through nine holes. After a bogey on No. 18, he rallied with birdies on the par-5 third and par-4 sixth to draw even. A bogey on his final hole (No. 8) closed his first round.

Diaz and Olsem had similar rounds en route to the same score. Diaz opened on the 10th hole and was 1-under at the turn with birdies on the par-5 10th and par-4 14th and 16th along with a pair of bogeys. He played the front side of the course at 3-over. Olsem started with a bogey on No. 8 and was 2-over through his first nine holes. He picked up a stroke with a birdie on the par-4 fifth but immediately followed with a bogey on No. 6 and a par the next hole.

Jeff Carr led the Hornets in the second round with a 2-over par round of 73. Carr had a birdie on the par-4 14th holes and three bogeys during the round. He is tied for 87th place at 77-73-150.

The team also received rounds of 74 from James and Olsem. James encountered some trouble in the early portion of his round and was 5-over through his first eight holes. However, he played his final 10 holes at 2-under par with four birdies and two bogeys. All of that action came on Nos. 1-6 where he had bogeys followed by a pair of birdies. James is tied for 59th at 72-74-146 and leads the team. Olsem is tied for 68th at 73-74-147. His second round also got off to a slow start as he was 4-over through his first six holes. Birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 18th dropped him to 2-over. He stayed there through 17 holes with a birdie and bogey in that run but ended his round with a bogey on No. 7.

The final score towards the team total in the second round came from Josh Diaz who shot 76. Diaz had a birdie and six bogeys.

UMKC built a 5-stroke lead over Missouri for the team lead. The Roos are 15-under as a team and were sparked by a 13-under par round of 271 in the afternoon. The Hornets enter the final round in 16th place at 289-297-586.
