SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Jeff Carr shot 72 for the low score among the Sacramento State men's golf team in the first round and Riley Bell paced the team with a 3-under par 68 in the second round of the Olympic Club Intercollegiate on Monday. The pair are tied for the team lead through two rounds with a total of 147.
Sacramento State is 12th heading into the final round on Tuesday. Cal State Fullerton, which won the Sacramento State Invitational last week, holds a 5-stroke lead over Nevada for the top spot. The Titans shot back-to-back rounds of 279 and are 4-over par. BYU (570), Santa Clara (572) and UC Davis (578) complete the top five.
The Hornets battled through a tough first round which saw the team finish at 28-over par. Aside from Jeff Carr's 1-over round, the team also counted a 79 from Bell, an 80 from Ethan Davidson and an 81 from Joe Fowler. Carr was 2-over through his first six holes as the sophomore began play with a bogey on the par-4 11th. He followed with a birdie on the par-4 12th but later added bogeys on Nos. 14 and 16. He moved to 3-over after a bogey on the par-4 second but finished strong, playing his final eight holes at 2-under. That stretch included birdies on the par-4 fifth and sixth as well as six pars.
The team was 21 strokes better in the second round. Bell opened the round with a bogey on the par-3 15th but that hole proved to be his lone over par score of the round. He quickly fell to 2-under with birdies on Nos. 16, 18 and 1. He then ran off eight straight pars, birdied the par-4 10th, and closed with four more pars.
Landon Azevedo ranked second on the team with a 1-over par round of 72. Azevedo had three birdies and four bogeys in his first action of the spring. Carr added a round of 75 and Davidson and Fowler each shot 76.
The third round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The Hornets will be paired with Pacific, Cal State Monterey Bay and Seattle. The groups will tee off on Nos. 8-11.
