ELK GROVE, Calif. — Ethan Davidson shot 71 and Jeff Carr 72 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the final round of the Sacramento State Invitational on Tuesday at Valley Hi Country Club. The Hornets tied for 10th place with a three-round total of 294-287-295-876.
Carr tied for 17th overall at 75-69-72-216. The sophomore birdied the par-5 fourth and the par-4 sixth to place him at 2-under through his first five holes. He finished even during the third round after bogeys on the par-4 11th and par-5 18th.
Davidson recorded the best 54-hole total of his career after shooting 69-77-71-217 to tie for 21st place. He led the team with four birdies in the final round. The freshman was even through his first 10 holes with a pair of birdies and bogeys. He moved to 1-under with a birdie of the par-3 16th but was even following a bogey on No. 18. Davidson dropped back into the red on the next hole as he birdied the par-4 first. His first and third round scores rank as his lowest and third-lowest performances of his young career.
Freshman Riley Bell tied for 54th at 77-70-76-223. Bell had identical scores of 38 on both sides of the course. On the front nine, he had bogeys on three of his first five holes but made the turn after a birdie on the par-4 ninth. He bogeyed three of the first six holes on the back nine to fall to 5-over par but birdied the par-4 17th.
Joe Fowler completed the team's third-round score with a 76. Fowler tied for 57th at 74-74-76-224. He started with four pars and was 1-under with a birdie on the par-3 fifth. From there, he had five bogeys over his remaining 12 holes.
Josh Diaz, who was competing as an individual and was making his Sacramento State debut, had the lowest mark among all Hornet golfers during the third round. The transfer from Regis, had a 2-under par round of 70 and finished tied for 26th place at 77-71-70-218. Diaz started with a bogey on No. 18 before moving back to even after a birdie on the par-5 fourth. He remained even through the 11th hole and surged with three birdies over a four-hole stretch (Nos. 12-15). He closed with a bogey on the par-4 17th.
Cal State Fullerton won the tournament by seven strokes. The Titans set a Sacramento State Invitational record by totaling 282-278-287-847. Long Beach State was second at 854 while Grand Canyon (855), Cal Baptist (866) and Pacific (867) completed the top five.
Jack Dyer of Cal State Fullerton was the medalist at 69-66-71-206 to finish at 10-under. Dyer birdied the 18th hole to break a tie with CBU's Harrison Kingsley to win the individual title.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Olympic Club Collegiate on March 11-12 in San Francisco.
