RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. — After wrapping up the second round, the Sacramento State men's golf team closed The Farms Invitational with its lowest team score of the tournament on Tuesday. The Hornets shot 304 during the third round and concluded the event in sixth place with a total of 306-308-304-918.
Christian James led Sacramento State on Tuesday, shooting a 3-over par round of 75. James tied for 32nd place overall to rank second on the team during his first event with the Hornets. He started the third round on the eighth hole and parred his first five holes before a birdie in the par-4 13th. Three straight bogeys took him to 2-over and he held there with pars on Nos. 17-2. James remained to 2-over four holes later with a birdie on the par-3 fifth, a bogey and two pars. He closed the tournament with a bogey on the par-4.
Ethan Davidson and Jeff Carr each shot 76 to tie for the second lowest score for the team in the third round. Davidson tied for 25th overall at 77-72-76-226 and Carr tied for 36th at 78-76-76-230. Davidson played his first six holes at 1-over with a bogey on the par-5 12th. His lone birdie came on the par-4 15th and returned him to even. Bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 were followed by seven consecutive pars. Davidson ended the round with a double bogey on the par-4 eighth.
Carr posted his second straight round of 76. The sophomore started on the seventh hole with a par but then bogeyed his next two holes. After three pars, he bogeyed Nos. 13 and 15 to jump to 4-over. From there, Carr recorded 10 consecutive pars to wrap up his round.
Eric Olsem shot 76-82-77-235 to tie for 45th place. On Tuesday, Olsem had a birdie on the par-5 ninth and six bogeys during his round. Joe Fowler shot 78-87-78-243 to place 54th. Fowler's third round was comprised of two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey.
Cal, which is currently 17th in the Golfstat rankings, ran away from the field to win the event by 36 strokes. The Golden Bears were under par in all three rounds, including shooting 14-under on Tuesday. Cal finished the event at 21-under par as a team with a total of 283-286-274-843. Loyola Marymount was second at 297-291-291-879.
Sacramento State finished eight shots ahead of Idaho — the only other Big Sky Conference school in the tournament.
The individual standings were dominated by Cal as the team had four of the top six finishers. Collin Morikawa shot 67-71-65-203 to finish at 13-under par and won by 11 strokes.
The Hornets will next compete at the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club on March 4-5.
