CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Freshman Ethan Davidson shot 74 to finish 2-over and lead the Sacramento State men's golf team during the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sunday at Cedar Rapids Country Club.
Davidson, who was making his collegiate debut, started on the 10th tee and parred his first six holes. He then birdied the par-4 16th and 17th before making the turn even following a double bogey on the par-4 18th. Davidson moved over par for the first time with a bogey on the par-4 second and later stood at 3-over with bogeys on Nos. 3 and 8. However, he closed with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.
Eric Olsem and Landon Azevedo recorded rounds of 76 to tie for second on the team. Olsem was even on the back nine with a bogey on the par-4 13th and a birdie on the par-4 17th. The junior played the front nine at 4-over with four bogeys and five pars.
Azevedo returned to the lineup for the first time since the spring of 2017. The senior had three bogeys and six pars in his first nine holes to make the turn at 3-over. He eventually moved to 5-over before a birdie on the par-4 seventh.
Frehman Riley Bell also competed in his first round as a Hornet and shot 79. Bell and a pair of double bogeys in his first five holes. He played his final 13 holes at 3-over with a birdie on the par-5 sixth and four bogeys.
Jeff Carr completed the lineup with an 82. Carr had two birdies, eight bogeys and two double bogeys.
Arkansas State opened a four-stroke lead in the team standings after shooting 11-under during the first round. ASU is followed by Jacksonville (-7), Iowa (-6), San Jose State (-5) and Campbell (-1) in the top five.
The tournament continues with single rounds on Monday and Tuesday. Sacramento State will be paired with Furman and Arkansas State during the second round. The teams will go off the 10th tee starting at 7:45 a.m. PT.
