MEN'S GOLF RALLIES TO DEFEAT MENLO AT MACKENZIE MATCH PLAY

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Zach Liberatore won on the 19th hole to give the Sacramento State men's golf team a 3-2 win over Menlo on Tuesday in a rain-soaked MacKenzie Match Play tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Hornets also recorded wins from Jeff Carr and Eric Olsem in the win.

Sacramento State briefly trailed the Oaks as Colin Casey defeated Devyn Fitchhorn, 7&6, in the fourth match. The Hornets took the lead with a pair of 4&3 wins from Carr and Olsem and Nos. 2 and 3 respectively. Menlo drew even after Fredrik Ingul outlasted Ash Patel, 1-up at No. 1.

With the match squared, 2-2, Liberatore and Te Shun Kung were forced to extra holes. The senior placed his tee shot within four feet of the pin on the par-3 and drained the putt for the victory.

Earlier in the day, the Hornets were topped by Cal State Monterey Bay, 5-0. Olsem and Callum Carlstron had the closest match of the day. The pair were all square through nine holes before Carlstrom won the 10th. They halved the remaining eight holes to give Carlstron the 1-up win. Maximilian Grieb defetaed Fitchhorn, 2&1 in the fourth match. The matched resumed with Fitchhorn leading 1-up through five holes. Grieb captured the sixth hole to square the match and eventually took the lead with a win on the ninth hole. They halved the next seven holes before Grieb parred the 17th to close the match.

Patel and Liberatore both lost 4&3 in their matches. Elis Svard downed Patel at No. 1 while Kirabo Reed had the victory at No. 5. The other win for the Otters came at No. 2 where Edward Hackett bettered Carr, 6&5.

Sacramento State will have a month off from competition before taking part in the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis on April 13-15.
