MEN'S GOLF WRAPS UP SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL WITH ITS BEST ROUND

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Led by a 1-under par round of 71 from Wonje Choi, the Sacramento State men's golf team produced its best score of the Sacramento State Invitational, shooting 291 during the third round on Tuesday at Valley Hi Country Club. The Hornets finished the tournament in eighth place with a total of 304-295-291-890.

Choi vaulted himself into the top 10 with his lowest round of the tournament. He shot 74-73-71-218 over the two days to tie for eighth place. Choi started the round with a birdie on the par-5 eighth and then parred seven consecutive holes. He alternated bogeys and birdies over the next four holes to stay at 1-under before moving to even with a bogey on the par-3 fifth. A birdie on No. 4 brought him back to red numbers and he closed with a par on No. 7.

Jeff Carr ranked second on the team and tied for 18th place at 79-70-72-221. Carr started on the ninth hole and was 1-under through his first 14 holes with a birdie on the par-5 13th and 13 pars. Consecutive bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6 took him to 1-over before a birdie on the par-3 seventh.

Senior Zach Liberatore shot 73 during the final round to place third among the team. Liberatore opened play with a double bogey on the par-4 11th but immediately answered with birdies on the par-4 12th and par-5 13th. He stayed even through nine holes after a bogey on No. 16 and a birdie on No. 17. Bogeys on the par-4 second and par-3 fifth moved him to 2-over but he ended the tournament by playing his final five holes at 1-under with a birdie on the par-5 eighth. Liberatore tied for 42nd overall at 80-76-73-229.

Ash Patel added the final score towards the team total with a round of 75 and tied for 35th in the tournament. Patel's third round consisted of three birdies and six bogeys. Eric Olsem completed the lineup at 75-76-79-230 to tie for 46th. Olsem had a birdie and eight bogeys in his third round.

The team also had a pair of individuals in the field led by Devyn Fitchhorn who tied for 23rd place at 73-76-73-222. Ftichhorn bogeyed two of his first three holes on Tuesday but finished at 1-over. He had four birdies in a 10-hole run which also included a bogey and a double bogey. Brandon Michaels tied for 60th place at 79-74-82-235. Michaels had two birdies, eight bogeys and two double bogeys in the third round.

Sacramento State will next compete at the MacKenzie Match Play in Santa Cruz, Calif., on March 12-13.
