STOCKTON, Calif. — Zach Liberatore shot 71 and Eric Olsem added an even par round of 72 to help the Sacramento State men's golf team move up three spots in the standings during the second round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Friday at the The Reserve at Spanos Park. The Hornets shot 290 during the round to finish the day at 2-over par. That performance moved the team into 16th place heading into the final round and was 10 strokes better than its first round score.
Liberatore and Olsem are tied for 38th place with a two-round total of 145. Liberatore parred his first four holes on Friday and was 2-over through seven holes following bogeys on the par-4 14th and par-5 16th. His score changed directions beginning with a birdie on the par-4 17th. He continued his run with birdies on the par-5 second, par-4 third and par-5 sixth to take him to 2-under par. The senior closed his round with a bogey on the par-4 seventh and two pars.
Olsem had a team high five birdies during the day but also had five bogeys. He opened quickly with birdies on the par-4 10th and the par-5 11th. The sophomore was even at the midway point of his round with a birdie on No. 16 and bogeys on Nos. 12, 17 and 18. Olsem dropped back under par with a birdie on the par-5 second but found himself at 1-over following bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5. A birdie on the par-5 sixth was followed by three pars to end his day at even.
Devyn Fitchhorn ranked third on the team with a round of 73. Fitchhorn is tied for 64th overall at 75-73-148. The sophomore was even on his first nine holes with a birdie on the 11th and a bogey on the par-4 18th. He started the front side of the course with two pars and stayed even with a sequence of birdie-bogey-par over the next three holes. Fitchhorn's final birdie came on the par-5 sixth and was followed by consecutive bogeys to take him to 1-over.
The final score towards the team total came from Wonje Choi who shot 74. The senior was even on the back nine with birdies on the par-5 11th and par-4 18th and bogeys on the par-4 14th and 17th. He started the front nine with six consecutive pars before bogeys on the par-4 seventh and par-3 eighth. Choi is now tied for 92nd place at 79-74-153.
Senior Ash Patel dropped to a tie for 104th at 78-81-159. Patel did not have a birdie during his second round and finished with five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
The Hornets were also represented by two players who were competing as individuals. Jeff Carr, who led all Sacramento State golfers with a 71 on Thursday, shot 76 and is now tied for 55th. His second round feature 14 pars and four bogeys. Brandon Michaels is tied for 85th at 74-77-151. Michaels had a birdie and six bogeys on Friday.
Santa Clara and BYU remain atop the leaderboard in the team competition. The Broncos were 5-under as a team in the second round and are how 14-under for the tournament. BYU was 4-under par on Friday and are four strokes back of Santa Clara. Nevada moved into a tie for second place after leading all teams with a 6-under par score in the second round. Grand Canyon is in fourth place and seven shots off the lead while Long Beach State and South Dakota are tied for fifth.
Alex Lee of Fresno State has shot 68-67-135 to take the individual lead. Lee is one stroke ahead of Grand Canyon's Filip Lundell (65-71-136).
Sacramento State will start its third round at 9:20 on Saturday off the 10th tee. The Hornets will be paired with CSUN, Boise State and Pacific's B team.
