FRESNO, Calif. — Sophomore Devyn Fitchhorn tied for the team lead in the first round and led the Sacramento State men's golf team in the second round of the Nick Watney Invitational on Monday at Sunnyside Country Club.
Sacramento State opened play with a 14-over par round of 298 in the morning. Fitchhorn and Eric Olsem each shot 74 while Ash Patel and Wonje Choi tallied 75. Fitchhorn was 5-over through his first four holes with three bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5 ninth. However, he played his final 14 holes at 2-under with birdies on the par-4 12th and second along with 14 pars. Olsem also had a slow start to his round with four bogeys over a five-hole stretch (Nos. 8-12). He wrapped up play in the first round with a birdie on the par-4 14th and 10 pars to finish at 3-over.
Patel began his day with a double bogey on the par-4 fifth and was never able to get lower in the first round. He had a pair of birdies along with four bogeys during the morning. Choi's first round features 14 pars with bogeys. He was 1-over through his first nine holes but had bogeys on Nos. 2, 4 and 5 in the latter half of the round.
Jeff Carr completed the lineup with a round of 77. Carr started on the seventh hole with a bogey and was 4-over following a double bogey on the par-4 13th. After five straight pars, he had three consecutive bogeys to move to 7-over. The freshman birdied the par-3 fourth and closed with two pars.
In the second round, Fitchhorn was 5-over through his first six holes with five bogeys. He worked his way back to just 1-over following birdies on the par-3 13th, par-4 16th, par-5 18th and par-4 first. After three pars, Fitchhorn wrapped up his day with a bogey on the par-4 fifth. His two-round total of 74-73-147 ties him for 24th place.
Olsem ranked second on the team in the afternoon with his second round of 74. He had three bogeys and 10 pars over his first 13 holes before a birdie on the par-4 first. From there, he had two pars, a bogey on the par-3 fourth, and another par. He is tied for 30th place at 74-74-148.
Patel is tied for 53rd at 75-76-151. He parred the first three holes of his second round and was still even following a bogey on the par-4 eighth and a birdie on the par-4 12th. However, he scattered five bogeys and five pars over his last 10 holes to end at 5-over.
Carr recorded a round of 78 in the second round. He was 2-over through his firs three holes but added a birdie on the par-4 12th. His round turned with a bogey on the par-3 13th and a quadruple bogey on the par-4 14th. He steadied himself with six straight pars before a pair of bogeys on Nos. 3 and 5. A birdie on the par-3 sixth closed his day.
Choi's second round consisted of two birdies, four bogeys, and three double bogeys en route to a 79. He is tied for 65th at 75-79-154.
Freshman Zak Sievers competed in the tournament as an individual. Sievers shot 76 in an opening round which had a little of everything. Sievers began the tournament on the 18th hole and was quickly 2-under with a stretch of par-birdie-birdie. That changed to 2-over with bogey-bogey-double bogey on the next three holes and he eventually was at 5-over through nine holes. Sievers birdied the par-5 ninth but added bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13 to stand at 6-over. He played his final four holes at 1-under with a birdie on the par-5 15th and three pars. In the second round, Sievers had a birdie on the 10th hole and seven bogeys.
Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's Utah and BYU are all tied for the team lead at 4-over par. Each team totaled 576 during the first two rounds and hold a two-stroke advantage of the next closest team. Sacramento State is tied for 11th place at 298-301-599.
Peter Kuest of BYU is the individual leader at 65-72-137. Kuest is 5-under par and leads Riley Elmes of LMU and Utah's Blake Tomlinson by three strokes.
