STANFORD, Calif. — Landon Azevedo shot 73 and Robert Parden, Wonje Choi and Devyn Fitchhorn each shot 75 to account for Sacramento State's team score of 298 during the final round of the NCAA Stanford Regional. The Hornets finished the tournament in 12th place with a total of 300-290-298-888.
Azevedo posted his best round of the postseason and finished 3-over par on Wednesday at 73. The sophomore was 3-over on the back nine and played the front nine at even par. He parred his first four holes of the day before a double bogey on the par-3 14th. A birdie on the par-5 16th took him back to 1-over before he double bogeyed the par-3 17th. On front side of the course, he had a birdie on the par-5 first and a bogey on the par-3 fourth. He tied for 65th overall in the tournament with a total of 76-77-73-226.
Parden had the highest finish on the team in the tournament. The senior shot 73-73-75-221 to tie for 57th place. On Wednesday, Parden started with a bogey on the par-4 10th and was 3-over following a double bogey on the par-3 14th. He made the turn at 4-over with a bogey on No. 18. Parden birdied two of the first three holes on the front nine but immediately added consecutive bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5. A birdie on the par-4 sixth came before bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8 and a par on the ninth.
Choi and Aaron Beverly tied for 59th with a 54-hole total of 222. Choi's third round started with three pars but he was 4-over at the midway point with a birdie on the par-4 16th, three bogeys and a double bogey all in a five hole stretch. He eventually stood at 7-over with bogeys Nos. 2, 3, and 6. However, he closed with birdies on the par-5 seventh and the par-3 eighth.
Beverly wrapped up the tournament with a round of 77. The senior, who was the Big Sky Golfer of the Year, was never able to get on track during a round which started with a double bogey on the 10th hole. He was 1-over through his first nine holes with the help of birdies on the par-4 13th and 15th. Four bogeys over the first five holes on the front side of the course took him to 5-over and he added a double bogey on the par-4 sixth before ending his day with three pars.
Freshman Devyn Fitchhorn shot 75 in the final round and had a total of 84-76-75-235 to finish in 72nd place. Fitchhorn bogeyed his first three holes and was 4-over at the turn. On the front nine, he had three birdies (Nos. 4, 6 and 7) and four bogeys.
Host Stanford and Baylor tied for the team lead at the event with both teams shooting 17-under during the three days. The two advanced to the NCAA Championships along with Pepperdine, Oklahoma and North Carolina.
Brad Dalke of Oklahoma posted three under-par rounds to finish at 12-under and become the medalist. Travis Trace of North Florida earned the lone individual berth by shooting 70-68-70-208 and being the low individual outside the five advancing teams.
Sacramento State was making its second NCAA Regional appearance in the school's Div. I history. The Hornets earned a berth after winning the Big Sky Conference title.
