BEVERLY AND PARDEN SHOOT 73 IN OPENING ROUND OF NCAA STANFORD REGIONAL

STANFORD, Calif. — Seniors Aaron Beverly and Robert Parden each shot 73 (3-over par) to tie for the low score for the Sacramento State men's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Stanford Regional on Monday.

The Hornets shot 300 to stand at 20-over during the day. The team is in 12th place overall but just four shots back of 11th. Host Stanford, which is ranked fourth nationally, holds a 6-stroke lead after shooting 9-under par. Baylor is second at 3-under while BYU (2-under), North Florida (1-under) and Oklahoma (even) complete the top five.

Beverly and Parden posted identical scores on both sides of the course with each shooting 37 on the back nine and 36 on the front side. The pair are tied for 41st place at 3-over and eight strokes behind Stanford's Maverick McNealy and Oklahoma's Brad Dalke who are tied for the individual lead at 5-under.

Parden was the first of the two on the course and was 2-over through four holes with bogeys on the par-4 11th and 13th. He birdied the par-4 15th before making the turn at 2-over with a bogey on the par-4 18th. Parden started the front nine with a birdie on the par-5 first but double bogeyed the par-4 second and bogeyed the par-3 third to move him to 4-over. He played the final six holes at 1-under with birdies on the par-4 sixth and ninth a bogey on the par-5 seventh.

Beverly birdied his first hole, the par-4 10th, but added three bogeys (Nos. 12, 16, 18) on five pars on the back nine. He remained at 2-over until a bogey on the par-3 fourth. Three more pars followed before a bogey on the par-3 seventh. Beverly closed with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.

Sophomore Landon Azevedo shot 76 to rank third on the team. Azevedo had four bogeys on the back nine for a 39. He birdied the first hole and added three more bogeys. He's tied for 61st overall. Wonje Choi shot 78 and is tied for 71st. Choi also had four bogeys over his first nine holes. He birdied the par-5 seventh and had three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine. Devyn Fitchhorn completed the lineup with an 84 and sits in 75th. The freshman's round was comprised of seven bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey.
