BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The winds decreased in the early going on Saturday and the scoring in the second round of the Big Sky Men's Golf Championship followed course. The Hornets finished at 3-under par during the round and built an 18-stroke lead heading into the final round on Sunday.
Sacramento State has shot 304-285-589 during the opening two rounds of the tournament. The team entered the second round trailing Weber State by one stroke but pulled away from the field with a team effort during the round which counted two eagles and 13 birdies compared to 10 bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey. Weber State is in second place at 303-304-607 and is followed closely by Northern Colorado (306-303-609).
"The winds were a little calmer on our first three or four holes but they picked up as the day went on with gusts over 30 miles per hour," Sacramento State head coach Kamden Brakel said. "The guys made some nice adjustments from the first round on playing into the wind and were able to make some nice shots."
The Hornets were led in the second round by Wonje Choi who matched his career best with a 3-under round of 69. Choi was even on the front nine with birdies on the par-5 second and par-4 ninth along with bogeys on the par-3 fourth and par-4 sixth. He crushed the back nine with three birdies and six pars. He started his run with a birdie on the par-4 10th and added birdies on the par-5 13th and 16th. His score moved him into third place overall.
Aaron Beverly is the individual leader after posting a score of 70 to move him to 1-under overall. Beverly started his round with four pars and then birdied the par-5 fifth. He made the turn at even following a bogey on the par-4 seventh. On the back nine, he birdied the par-4 11th as well as the par-5 13th and 17th to take him to 3-under for the day. His lone bogey on the back nine came on the par-3 17th and preceded a par on No. 18. Beverly has a 1-shot lead of Hartford's Elias Gross for the individual lead and is two strokes ahead of Choi.
Senior Robert Parden matched Beverly's score during the round and vaulted himself into fifth place at 77-70-147. Parden was the only Hornet to be under par on both sides of the course during the round. After a bogey on the par-3 fourth, he made the turn at 1-under with birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-4 ninth. His final nine holes featured seven pars but was highlighted by an eagle on the 579-yard, par-5 13th. He also had a bogey on the par-4 14th.
The final score towards the team total came from Devyn Fitchhorn who shot 76. The freshman traded birdies and bogeys over holes 3-6. However, a double bogey on the par-4 ninth took him to 2-over at the midway point of his round. He started the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 10th but moved to 5-over with a bogey on the par-3 12th and a triple bogey on the par-4 15th. He bounced back with an eagle on the 635-yard, par-5 16th and closed his day with a bogey on No. 17 and a par on No. 18. Overall he is tied for 13th at 10-over.
Landon Azevedo completed the lineup and is tied for 21st at 79-78-157. Azevedo's second round was comprised of a birdie, a bogey and double bogey on the front side of the course and a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine.
