ELK GROVE, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team counted four scores of 74 or better but could not make up any ground during the final round of the Sacramento State Invitational on Tuesday at Valley Hi Country Club.
The Hornets totaled 293 as a team during the round and finished in fourth place. The team's total of 885 left it six strokes behind UC Santa Barbara for third place. Grand Canyon was even during the final day and won the team title by 12 strokes. The Lopes finished at 289-285-288-862. Cal State Fullerton was second with a three-round total of 874.
Sacramento State was led by Connor Day who shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Day started with a birdie on the first hole and made the turn even following bogeys on the par-4 third and par-5 fourth and a birdie on the par-5 eighth. Consecutive bogeys on the first two holes of the back nine jumped him to 2-over par but he earned a stroke back with a birdie on the par-4 12th. A bogey on No. 15 was immediately followed by birdied on the par-3 16th and par-4 17th. Overall, Day tied for 13th place at 75-76-72-223.
Senior Aaron Beverly shot 73 during the final round. Beverly had eight pars and a bogey on his first nine holes and fell to 4-over after a triple-bogey on the par-4 12th. From there, he played the his final six holes at 3-under par with birdies on Nos. 13, 17 and 18. Beverly shot 74-73 in the final two rounds but did not rank in the final individual standings after having to withdraw from the first round due to injury.
Wonje Choi and Robert Parden each shot 74 to complete the team score. Choi placed 10th overall for the highest finish on the team with rounds of 71-76-74-221. His third round started with three birdies, three pars and three bogeys on the front nine. He bogeyed the first two holes of the back nine and finished 2-over with a birdie and bogey over his final seven holes.
Parden posted his second round of 74 during the tournament and was able to bounce back from a tough second round. The senior was steady throughout the third round with a birdie on the par-5 fourth and three bogeys. He ended the tournament tied for 34th place at 74-83-74-231.
Zach Liberatore, who led the team after the first day, shot 76 in the final round to tie for 11th. Liberatore had a birdie and five bogeys during the round.
Cody Bates led three Hornets who were competing as individuals. Bates tied for 25th place with a total of 78-75-75-228. He started Tuesday on the 10th tee with a double bogey. However, he was even after birdies on Nos. 13 and 17 but double bogeyed No. 18. On the front nine, he had one bogey and eight pars.
Landon Azevedo shot an even-par round of 72 to tie for the best score by a Hornet in the tournament. Azevedo moved into a tie for 39th place overall at 82-78-72-232. He was 1-over at the midway point of his day with a bogey and eight pars on his first nine holes. He moved to even following a birdie on No. 3. He closed with a birdie, four pars and a bogey over his final six holes.
Devyn Fitchhorn shot 78-80-74-232 to also tie for 39th place. Fitchhorn's final round was comprised of three birdies and five bogeys.
Grand Canyon's Billy Comeaux was the medalist and finished the tournament at 72-69-71 (4-under). Teammate Vinnie Murphy and UCSB's Brandon Bauman were one stroke behind in a tie for second place.
Sacramento State will make a quick return to competition as the team will compete in the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas beginning on Friday.
