ELK GROVE, Calif. — Wonje Choi shot a 1-under par round of 71 in the morning and Zach Liberatore posted a team best round of 70 in the second round to lead the Hornets during the first day of the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday at Valley Hi Country Club. The tournament will conclude with a single round on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Sacramento State is in fourth place after the first two rounds. The Hornets shot 296 in both rounds but are 18 strokes back of Grand Canyon. The Lopes shot 289-285-574 and lead second-place UC Santa Barbara by 10 strokes. Cal State Fullerton is third at 588 and the Hornets lead UC Irvine, UC Riverside and British Columbia, who are tied for fifth place, by 19 strokes.
Liberatore sits in sixth place after shooting 76-70-146. The junior had three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey in the opening round to finish at 4-over par. He then responded with a 2-under par round of 70 for the third-lowest round of his career. He started with three pars beginning on the the third hole and then double bogeyed the sixth. From there, he birdied the par-3 seventh and moved to 2-under following birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th. A bogey on the par-4 15th was followed by birdies on the par-3 16th and par-4 17th. He then bogeyed the 18th before closing with a pair of pars.
Choi paced the team during the morning with a nearly flawless round. The junior parred his first nine holes and dropped to 1-under following a birdie on the par-4 11th. Five more pars were trailed by a birdie on the par-4 17th, a bogey on the par-5 18th and a par on No. 1. Choi had two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey in the second round to shoot 71-76-147 which ties him for seventh place.
Connor Day ranks third on the team and is tied for 18th place overall at 75-76-151. Day had two birdies and four bogeys over his first nine holes and jumped to 4-over with a double bogey on the par-5 13th. After two pars, he birdied No. 16 and 17 but ended at 3-over after a bogey on No. 2. Day started the second round with a birdie on No. 4 but immediately followed with a pair of bogeys. He was 2-over at the midway point of his round and had seven pars and two bogeys on his last nine holes.
Seniors Robert Parden and Aaron Beverly each had a round of 74 during the day. Parden's came in the opening round where he had four birdies and six bogeys. The second round was not as kind as he was 6-over through his first six holes and finished the day at 11-over with nine bogeys and a double bogey. His total of 74-83-157 ties him for 40th place. Beverly was forced to withdraw from the opening round due to neck stiffness but returned in the afternoon. He parred his first three holes and was 1-under after a birdie on the par-5 fourth. A bogey on No. 5 and a birdie on No. 8 left him at 1-under at the turn. He started the back nine with six pars but played his final three holes at 3-over par.
Sacramento State was also represented by three individuals. Cody Bates leads the trio at 78-75-153 to tie for 22nd. Devyn Fitchhorn shot 78-80-158 and is tied for 45th while Landon Azevedo is tied for 51st at 82-78-160.
Brandon Bauman holds a 1-stroke advantage for the individual lead after 36 holes. Bauman shot 73 in the first round and rallied behind a bogey-free round of 67. The Grand Canyon duo of Jake Chanen and Billy Comeaux each totaled 141 and are tied for second.
