DAVIS, Calif. — Luke Kristo, Cody Bates and Robert Parden each shot an even-par round of 72 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the first round of the El Macero Invitational on Friday.

The trio is tied for ninth place and guided the Hornets into a tie for third place with a team score of 293. Host UC Davis holds the team lead at 283 and is followed by Cal State Fullerton (285). Sacramento State is tied with Nevada for third. Individually, Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton carded seven birdies without a bogey for a 7-under par round of 65 to lead the individual standings.

All five of the Hornet golfers started the day on the 10th hole and battled gusty winds in the morning. Kristo parred his first hole but then bogeyed the next three. After a par on No. 14, he began his comeback with a birdie on the par-4 15th and par-3 16th. The junior returned to even following a birdie on the par-5 18th and later moved to 1-under with a birdie on the par-3 third which capped a streak where played seven holes at 4-under. A bogey on the par-5 fifth moved him back to even where he remained over his final four holes.

Bates was the steadiest player on the team on the back nine. The freshman had three pars before a birdie on the par-4 13th and a bogey on the par-4 14th. A bogey on No. 17 left him at 1-over at the midway part of his round. He later stood at 2-over before birdying Nos. 4 and 5 to return to even. Bates overcame a bogey on the par-4 eighth with a birdie on the par-4 ninth to end his round.

Parden was the lone Hornet to break par on his first nine holes. Standing at 1-over through three holes, he birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 18 to become 2-under par. Three pars started his front side of the course and he birdied the par-4 fourth. Despite a bogey on No. 6, Parden remained 2-under with just two holes to play. A triple bogey on the par-4 eighth temporarily derailed his round before he birdied the par-4 ninth to finish at 72.

Owen Taylor completed the team total with a round of 77. The junior, who has led the team throughout the season, was 8-over on the back side of the course with six bogeys and a double bogey. The front side was much kinder as he had birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 7 along with six pars.

Jordan Weir shot 79 with a round comprised of a birdie, six bogeys and a double bogey.

The second round of the 54-hole tournament will take place on Saturday.
