SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Junior Owen Taylor shot 70 to claim his first individual collegiate title on Tuesday at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate. The Sacramento State men recorded the second lowest team score of the day but finished in third place with a three-round total of 872.

Long Beach State rallied for the team title after shooting 287-296-286-869. The 49ers were trailed by host UC Santa Barbara (288-291-292-871), Sacramento State (291-291-290-872), Air Force (292-291-293-876) and UC Riverside (291-293-298-882) in the top five.

The victory is the latest accolade for Taylor who has also finished second and tied for second third and fourth this season in 10 events. In his third round on Tuesday, he parred his first four holes before a birdie on the par-5 fifth. Two more pars were followed by two bogeys which left him at 1-over through nine holes. His back nine began with three pars and he moved into red numbers with an eagle of the 532-yard, par-5 13th. After a pair of pars, he birdied the par-4 16th and ended his day with two more pars.

Freshman Cody Bates was also under par on Tuesday with a round of 71. Bates tied for 15th after shooting 75-73-71-219. The McKinleyville, Calif., native had great starts to each side of his round but found trouble near the end. Bates was 3-under after eighth holes with birdies on Nos. 5, 7 and 8. However, he made the turn at 1-under after a double bogey on the par-4 ninth. He later dropped to 4-under after three birdies and three pars to begin his back nine. Bates wrapped up his round with bogeys on Nos. 16, 17 and 18.

Freshman Robert Parden tied for 17th place after shooting 71-74-75-220. Parden's final round was comprised of two birdies five bogeys. Jordan Weir provided the final score towards the team total on Tuesday. Weir shot 74 with the help of an eagle on No. 13, three birdies, four bogeys and a triple bogey.

Sacramento State will have a quick turnaround before competing at the El Macero Classic on Friday-Sunday in Davis, Calif. The team will then host the America Sky Championships in Angels Camp, Calif., April 25-27.
