MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND; TAYLOR THIRD AT OGIO UCSB INTERCOLLEGIATE

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Freshman Robert Parden shot led Sacramento State with a round of 71 in the opening round and Owen Taylor had a team-best 68 in the second round of the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate on Monday at Sandpiper Golf Club.

Those scores have helped the Hornets move into second place heading into the final round on Tuesday morning. Sacramento State shot two rounds of 291 and is three strokes back of host UCSB. The Hornets also have a one stroke advantage of Air Force and Long Beach and are two strokes ahead of UC Riverside.

Taylor is tied for third to lead the team. The junior fluctuated between even and 1-over for his first 15 holes before a bogey on the par-3 sixth left him at 2-over par. In the second round, Taylor opened with a par on No. 9 and then birdied Nos. 10, 12 and 13 to drop to 3-under. Five consecutive pars were followed by a birdie on the par-4 first. Three more pars came before a birdie on the par-5 fifth to take him to 5-under. He then bogeyed Nos. 6 and 7 but bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 eighth.

Taylor's first day total of 74-68-142 places him behind Utah's Casey Halliday (72-68-140) and Fresno State's Keenan Nelson (73-68-141).

Parden is tied for eighth place at 71-74-145. The freshman played his opening round at 1-under par with the help of four birdies and just three bogeys. Parden remained steady in the second round with two birdies, and four bogeys.

Cody Bates shot 75-73-148 and is tied for 29th. Bates was even through his first seven holes but then bogeyed four of his next nine holes. He recovered with a birdie on the par-4 seventh and ended with a bogey. In the afternoon round, Bates had two birdies and three bogeys over his first seven holes before birdies on Nos. 16-18 dropped him to 2-under. He remained there until concluding his round with three bogeys.

Jordan Swanson and Jordan Weir are tied for 31st and 50th, respectively. Swanson shot 73-76-149. His first round was comprised of three birdies and four bogeys. He added a round with a birdie, three pars and a double bogey. Weir's first round had four birdies and five bogeys. His second round had a birdie, six bogeys and two double bogeys.
