Men's Golf

PULLMAN, Wash. — Sacramento State's Jordan Weir and Ryan Williams both shot under par during the first round of the NCAA Pullman Regional on Thursday at Palouse Ridge Golf Course. Weir shot 66 and is tied for eighth while Williams totaled 71 which ties him for 36th.

Weir, who was the medalist at the America Sky Conference Championships in his most recent tournament, carded a bogey free round that featured four birdies and an eagle. He opened the day with eight pars before he began a nine-hole stretch that he played at 6-under. The streak began on the par-5 ninth where he had a birdie. After two pars, he birdied the par-4 12th. Weir made his jump up the leaderboard with birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 (both par fours). A par on No. 16 came before he eagled the 527-yard par-5 17th.

Williams birdied the par-4 second hole before a double bogey on the par-4 third took him to 1-over. He returned to even with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and remained there until a bogey on the par-3 11th. The senior rallied late in his round with birdies on Nos. 15 and 17.

"Both guys played really good golf today" Sacramento State men's coach Christopher Hall said. "The way they're both hitting the ball I wouldn't be surprised if they both stay in the hunt throughout the tournament. Jordan made some big putts to save pars and make birdies. Ryan was also steady and made up some ground towards the end."

Scores for the day were low all around led by Sam Smith of USC who set the course record with a round of 62. Mac McClung of Saint Mary's is second at 63.

"There was very little wind and that's the only defense this course has," Hall explained. "You could see by the records that were set today that the conditions were nearly perfect."

California, which entered as the nation's top ranked team, shot a school record 265 (23-under) to take the lead. Saint Mary's also set a school record at 267 to rank second. The top five teams in the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships in Atlanta. The lowest individual outside of those five teams will also compete at the finals. Weir's score places him just one stroke outside of that position.
