MEN'S GOLF RECORDS SECOND BEST SCORE IN SCHOOL HISTORY; WILLIAMS SHOOTS 68
STOCKTON, Calif. — Early morning fog couldn't slow down the Sacramento State men's golf team as the Hornets posted the second best round in school history on Tuesday. After fog delayed the start of the second round of the SCVB Pacific Invitational, Sacramento State shot 279 with all five golfers finishing under par.
The Hornets' score matches the effort in the second round of the Purple & Red Invitational in October of 2010. The only better mark came in the second round of the Cal Poly Challenge in March of 2011 where Sacramento State totaled 277.
Senior Ryan Williams led the Hornets' effort on Tuesday with a round of 68 to match his career low. Freshman Aaron Beverly shot 69 to beat his young career best by five strokes. Jordan Swanson, Owen Taylor and Eric Taylor each finished with round of 71.
The Hornets, who moved from 12th to 10th place during the day, were not the only the team to post blistering numbers during the round. Kansas State maintained its team lead with a round of 270. Nevada had the lowest score of the day at 269.
Beginning on the first hole, Williams birdied the par-4 first and was even after bogeying the third. Birdies on Nos. 4 and 5 helped him make the turn at 2-under par. He began his final nine holes with a birdie and later birdied the par-4 13th before playing the final five holes at even par.
Beverly was even through the first nine holes with a birdie the second hole and a bogey on the third. On the back nine, he opened with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 as well as a birdie on No. 13.
Owen Taylor finished with four birdies, 11 pars and three bogeys. Jordan Swanson eagled the par-5 10th for his highlight and also had a birdie, 14 pars and two bogeys. Eric Taylor finished with five birdies, 10 pars, two bogeys and a double bogey.
Pacific's Alex Edfort holds the individual lead heading into Wednesday's final round at 65-66-131.
