PULLMAN, Wash. — Ryan Williams shot an even-par 72 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate on Tuesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. Williams finished the three-round tournament tied for 19th place with a total of 76-80-72-228.
The Hornets recorded their best total of the tournament (294) during the third round but finished in ninth place overall. Host Washington pulled away from the field to win the team title. The Cougars totaled 875 to finish 12 strokes ahead of Arizona. Sacramento State had rounds of 311-314-294-919.
Williams, and the rest of the field, began the third round on the 10th hole. He started with four consecutive pars before a birdie on the par-4 14th. Two more pars were followed by a birdie on the par-5 17th and a par on 18. On the front nine, he bogeyed the par-4 1st but immediately regained the stroke with a birdie on the par-4 2nd. He closed with pars on six of his final seven holes with only a double bogey on the par-3 4th breaking his string.
Owen Taylor tied for 24th overall with a 54-hole total of 229. Taylor shot 73 during the final round with the help of an eagle on the par-5 17th. His round also included four birdies, seven pars, five bogeys and a double bogey. The sophomore's final round score was the third lowest of his collegiate career.
Freshman Aaron Beverly posted his lowest total of the tournament with a 2-over 74. Beverly tied for 34th overall after shooting 79-79-74-232. On Tuesday, Beverly was 1-over through nine holes with a birdie on 17 and a double-bogey on the par-3 13th. On the front nine, he had a birdie on No. 2 as well as two bogeys.
Sophomore Eric Taylor also recorded his best score of the event with a 75. Taylor tied Beverly for 34th after shooting 77-80-75. Taylor got off to a slow start, standing at 3-over through five holes before a birdie on the par-4 15th. A bogey on 16 was answered with a birdie on 17 and then three consecutive pars. He played his final seven holes at 1-over with two birdies, two pars and three bogeys.
Junior Jordan Weir started the third round like he ended the second, opening with eight pars to extend his streak to 17 consecutive pars dating back to the previous round. After a bogey on 18, Weir parred the first three holes on the front and birdied the par-3 4th. A triple bogey on No. 5 placed him at 3-over where he remained for the rest of the round. Weir finished tied for 46th at 81-78-75-234.
Washington State's Hank Frame used a 4-under 68 to move from third place entering the final round to become the medalist. Frame shot 76-69-68-213 to finish four strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Sept. 24-25 in Seaside, Calif.
