ELK GROVE, Calif. — Ryan Williams, Owen Taylor and Aaron Beverly each tallied a 36-hole total of 146 to lead Sacramento State during the first day of the Sacramento State Invitational presented by The Old Spaghetti Factory on Monday at Valley Hi Country Club.

Hosting its first men's golf tournament in over a decade, the Hornets are in seventh place heading into the final round on Tuesday. With rounds of 67 and 70 from individual leader Glen Scher, UC Santa Barbara opened a two-stroke lead over Chico State and Cal State Fullerton. The Gauchos posted the low round of the day (282) before shooting 290 in the afternoon.

Sacramento State began the tournament slowly, with none of its five golfers shooting par or better in the opening 18 holes. Things turned around in the afternoon with three scores of 72 or better. In fact, the team's second round trailed only USC Upstate (283) for the lowest team mark of the afternoon.

Williams was a key contributor to the turnaround, bouncing back from an opening round 77 to shoot 69. The senior was just 1-over through his first nine holes but bogeyed four of his final nine in the morning. During the second round, he was 1-under at the turn with birdies on the par-5 fourth and eighth. He dropped to 3-under after birdies on Nos. 10 and 13 but gave a stroke back with a bogey on the par-3 14th. Three pars as well as a birdie on the par-3 16th moved him into a tie for 21st place.

Taylor was the only Sacramento State golfer to shoot the same score in both rounds. The sophomore recorded his first 73 behind two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys. His second round was more up-and-down with an eagle on the par-5 fourth as his highlight. He also had birdies on Nos. 1, 13 and 15 but also bogeyed six holes.

Beverly stood at 3-over after the first five holes of his first round with a stretch of three consecutive bogeys (5-7). He parred 12 of his final 13 holes and had a birdie on the par-4 12th to finish at 2-over. He continued his hot play into the second round where he had  birdies and three pars among his first five holes. A bogey on the par-3 seventh stopped the streak momentarily before he birdied No. 8 and then parred the next seven in a row. A birdie on the par-4 first, two pars and two bogyes ended his day at 72.

Veteran Jordan Weir also sparked the Sacramento State comeback with rounds of 76 and 71 to tie for 27th place. Weir opened on the first hole and had a pair of birdies and bogeys at the midway point of his round. The backside of the course left him at 4-over with five pars and four bogeys. In the second round, Weir opened with two pars, a birdie on the par-4 third and another par. He was again even at the turn and remained there until a bogey on the par-3 16th took him to 1-over. The junior returned to the red by birdying the par-4 17th and the par-5 18th.

Jordan Swanson is tied for 55th place after shooting 76-77. Swanson had a birdie, 12 pars and five bogeys in the first round. His second round consisted of two birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

The third round will begin at 8 a.m. with teams going off the first and 10th tees. Sacramento State will be paired with Loyola Marymount and Houston Baptist during the day.
