Men's Golf


FRESNO, Calif. — Jordan Weir posted his best score of the year, a 1-under par 71, to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the third round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Tuesday at Belmont Country Club.

Weir's final round capped his best tournament of 2012-13 as the junior finished with a 54-hole total of 72-74-71-217 to tie for 26th place. On Tuesday, the Hornets began on the 10th hole where Weir parred three of his first four holes along with a birdie on the par-5 12th. A double bogey on the par-4 14th was followed by three pars and a bogey on No. 18 (par-5) to leave him at 2-over at the turn.

On the front side of the course, Weir birdied the par-4 first and the par-3 second to return to even. Following two pars, he birdied to the par-5 fifth before two more pars. A bogey on the par-3 eighth took him back to even before closing his round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.

Senior Ryan Williams recorded the highest finish on the team, tying for 22nd. Williams shot 72-71-72-215 to finish at 1-under. The Clovis, Calif., native opened the third round slowly with three bogeys through his first seven holes. After parring the 17th, Williams jump started his round with an eagle on the par-5 18th. A bogey on No. 2 was his last blemish of the day as he ended with five pars and birdies on Nos. 4 and 9.

Sophomore Owen Taylor finished third on the team on Tuesday with a 1-over par 73. Taylor birdied the 10th to begin his round but made the turn at 2-over following a double bogey on No. 12 and two additional bogeys (Nos. 16 and 17). Taylor then pieced together seven consecutive pars and ended with birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 with a par in between. His 54-hole total of 74-74-73-221 tied him for 52nd.

Jordan Swanson and Aaron Beverly shot 75 and 76, respectively, to complete the lineup for the Hornets. Swanson birdied four of his first eight holes but then bogeyed five of his next seven. He was even after a birdie on the seventh but a triple bogey on No. 9 ended his day. Beverly's final round consisted of two birdies, 10 pars and six bogeys. Overall, Swanson tied for 44th and Beverly finished tied for 85th.

Top-ranked California extended its lead and dominated the tournament. The Golden Bears finished with a total of 1,037 and were 37 strokes ahead of host Fresno State which finished second. Cal also had the top three individuals, led by Michael Kim who was the medalist at 68-65-67-200.

Sacramento State tied for 13th place after totaling 1101. The Hornets will next be in action at the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club on March 11-12.
