MORE RECORDS FALL FOR MEN'S GOLF AT PACIFIC INVITATIONAL
STOCKTON, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team continued to rewrite the record book during the final day of the SCVB Pacific Invitational on Wednesday at Brookside Country Club.
As a team, the Hornets set the school record with a round of 276 and also the 54-hole mark with a total of 851. Individually, Ryan Williams tied the 54-hole mark at 204 and his third-round 67 is tied for eighth.
Unfortunately for Sacramento State, the Hornets were not the only team to destroy the course. Kansas State won the team title with a total of 817, finishing 47 strokes under par. Pacific and Nevada were one stroke back to tie for second while UC Davis (819) and BYU (820) completed the top five.
Sacramento State finished in 10th place with a total of 296-279-276-851. That mark was six strokes better than the previous 54-hole team record of 857 which came at the Purple & Red Invitational in 2010.
Williams tied for 10th place with a near-flawless round. The senior began with an eagle on the par-5 10th and added three pars. A bogey on the par-3 14th was his lone miscue of the round. He alternated pars and bogeys over the next four holes before making the turn at 3-under. On the front side of the course, Williams pared his first and last three holes. In the middle, he had birdies on the par-5 fourth and the par-4 fifth and sixth.
Freshman Aaron Beverly also set his career best with a round of 68. Beverly finished tied for 36th place at 75-69-68-212. On Wednesday, he capitalized on four birdies (Nos. 8, 9, 10, 16) and did not have a bogey.
Eric Taylor shot 69 in the third round and tied for 46th. Taylor parred his first six holes before a bogey on the par-5 16th took him to 1-over. Consecutive birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 dropped him into negative numbers and he continued to add to that number with a birdie on the par-4 second. Three pars were trailed by birdies on the par-4 sixth and the par-5 seventh. A bogey on the par-4 ninth ended his round.
Owen Taylor and Jordan Swanson each tied for 51st place. Taylor shot 73 during his final round with five birdies, seven pars and six bogeys. Swanson closed the tournament with a round of 76 consisting of two birdies, 12 pars, two bogeys and two double bogeys.
The tournament was the final event for the men's team during the fall portion of its schedule. The team will next compete at the Folino Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, beginning on Feb. 17.
