WILLIAMS TIES FOR FIRST AT FOLINO INVITATIONAL, TEAM PLACES FIFTH
CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — Sacramento State senior Ryan Williams tied for first after 54-holes of the Folino Invitational but was edged in a three-man playoff on Tuesday at Industry Hills Golf Club.
Williams shot 75 during the third round and concluded 54 holes at 2-under par (69-70-75-214). That total placed him in a tie with UC Irvine's Travis Russell (71-71-72) and Loyola Marymount's Tyler Torano (75-67-72). The playoff began on the 18th hole where the trio each recorded pars before Russell won with a 10-foot birdie putt on the second time through. Williams had a chance to extend the playoff but missed a 12-footer on the high edge of the cup.
Williams began the third round of the tournament on the 12th hole with a bogey and a double-bogey on the par-3 13th. A birdie on the par-4 14th was trailed by a bogey on the par-3 15th. From that point, he played his final 14 holes even with two birdies and two bogeys.
The finish was the highest for Williams during his career and marked his second top-five finish in 14 career tournaments. His 54-hole total is tied for his second best, trailing only a 204 at the Pacific Invitational in October of 2012.
"Ryan provided a real gritty 75. He stayed patient and kept hitting good shots," Sacramento State men's head coach Christopher Hall said. "He will be able to walk away from this event with confidence knowing that he can play at a high level."
Jordan Weir and Jordan Swanson each shot 79 during the final round and Owen Taylor provided an 80 towards the team total. Overall, Weir tied for 24th, Swanson tied for 27th, Taylor tied for 34th and Aaron Beverly was 40th.
Sacramento State finished in fifth place in the team standings with scores of 297-296-313-906. Long Beach State rallied for the team title, shooting 289 in the final round and totaling 872. UC Irvine (876), Loyola Marymount (895) and Cal State Fullerton (897) finished above the Hornets.
In the third round, Weir had three birdies, seven pars, six bogeys and two double-bogeys. Swanson provided a birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and a double-bogey. Taylor had three birdies and six pars but also bogeyed seven holes and had a pair of double-bogeys.
Sacramento State will next play at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on March 4-5.
