SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State sixth-year men's basketball head coach Brian Katz announced the program's 2013-14 schedule today.
The schedule includes 29 regular season games, comprised of 14 at home and 15 on the road. For the second straight year, Sacramento State will play 20 Big Sky Conference games after North Dakota and Southern Utah were added to the league prior to the 2012-13 season.
Sacramento State returns eight players and a redshirt from last year's squad that finished with its most overall victories in seven years (14), tied for the most Big Sky wins since joining the conference (8), and tied for the most home wins during the Div. I era (10). Among those returners are the starting backcourt of junior point guard Dylan Garrity and junior shooting guard Mikh McKinney.
This year's schedule includes home games against UC Irvine and UC Riverside, as well as road games at UCLA and UTEP, and the 112th meeting against UC Davis. The Hornets will be playing UCLA for just the second time ever (and first since the 2005-06 season) while the game at UTEP will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Sacramento State will also play at Cal State Fullerton for the first time since the 2003-04 season, and the home game against UC Irvine will be the first meeting against the Anteaters since the 2004-05 season. Other non-conference home games include UC Santa Cruz (first meeting since 1986-87) and William Jessup (eighth meeting in 11 years against the Warriors).
The Hornets play a home exhibition game against Menlo on Friday, Nov. 1, before their season opener at home against UC Santa Cruz on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:35 p.m. The game against UC Santa Cruz is the nightcap of a doubleheader that will see the Hornet women take on Cal State Northridge at 5:05 p.m. The Hornets will then hit the road for a three-game trip to CSU Bakersfield, UCLA and UC Davis.
Of the team's final five non-conference games, three will come at home against UC Irvine (Nov. 30), William Jessup (Dec. 14) and UC Riverside (Dec. 29).
The Hornets open Big Sky play on Jan. 2 at Montana State. That is the first of a four-game road trip to open league play which includes games at Montana (Jan. 4), Northern Arizona (Jan. 9) and Southern Utah (Jan. 11).
Sacramento State's first home game against a conference opponent will take place on Thursday, Jan. 16, against Portland State at 7:05 p.m. Ten of the team's final 16 conference games will come inside The Nest, including a season-long four-game homestand against Idaho State (Jan. 30), Weber State (Feb. 1), Northern Arizona (Feb. 6) and Southern Utah (Feb. 10).
The team's final regular season games will take place at home on March 6 against Montana State and March 8 vs. Montana.
The Big Sky Tournament will, once again, feature the top seven teams in the conference and take place over three days (March 13-15) on the home floor of the regular season champion. The No. 1 seed will receive a bye into the semifinals while Thursday's quarterfinal games will consist of No. 2 taking on the No. 7 seed, No. 3 facing No. 6, and No. 4 taking on the No. 5 seed. The semifinal games will take place on March 14, with the championship played on March 15. The winner of the championship game receives the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
