MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYS SEASON OPENER FRIDAY AT HOME AGAINST UC MERCED

Sacramento State opens the 2012-13 season on Friday when the team hosts UC Merced at 7:05 p.m…the Hornets are 5-16 in season openers since joining the Div. I ranks in 1991-92…that includes a 4-5 record when the team begins the season at home…Sacramento State and UC Merced will play each other for the first time ever…UC Merced, which is an NAIA school and member of the California Pacific Conference, played its inaugural season of basketball last year when the Bobcats went 6-15 overall and 5-7 in the Cal Pac…in the Hornets' lone exhibition game last week (Oct. 30), Sacramento State defeated Simpson, 88-55, inside the Nest…Friday could mark the Sacramento State regular season debuts of six players, comprised of juniors Ryan OkwudibonyeJoey Quigley and Jordan Salley, sophomore Mikh McKinney and freshmen Cody Demps and Dreon Barlett…eight players return from last season's squad which posted a 10-18 overall record and 5-11 conference mark…among those eight returners are the top five scorers from a year ago… like every home game, and each road game played in a Big Sky Conference venue, Friday's contest can be seen live and free on www.bigskytv.org…the game can also be heard on the internet at www.hornetsports.com with 16th year play-by-play announcer Steve McElroy calling all the action...live stats for the game are also available via www.hornetsports.com…selected games will be aired over the radio in the foothills on KAHI 950 AM…the first of those broadcasts will come next week when the Hornets take on CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 14…three of Sacramento State's first four games will come inside the friendly confines, including a date with rival UC Davis on Nov. 20.
