MEN'S BASKETBALL KNOCKS OFF ISLANDERS, 84-80

1/14/2003

Junior Brandon Guyton
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas --- Brandon Guyton scored a career-high 21 points and Derek Lambeth added 19 to help lead the Sacramento State men’s basketball team to an 84-80 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday night at the Circle K Center.

The win improved the Hornets to 7-8 overall and gave the team its second-consecutive road victory and fourth win away from home this season. The Islanders dropped to 6-9.

Guyton, who has struggled from the outside for much of the season, connected on 7-of-11 three-point attempts during the game to account for his 21 points. The seven threes are the most by a Sacramento State player since Joseth Dawson also made seven at Portland State on Feb. 1, 2002.

Lambeth recorded another strong outing, making 7-of-12 field goals, including a pair of three-pointers. The senior also tallied a pair of steals and had four assists.

The pair were joined in double figures by Raashad Hooks and Tony Champion who scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Hooks completed a double-double with a career-high 12 assists while Champion was just one rebound shy of his first career double-double.

As a team, Sacramento State shot .519 from the field as it made 27-of-52 shots. The Hornets were also deadly from behind the arc where they were 10-of-22 (.455).

Corpus Christi also had four players score at least 10 points led by Brian Evans’ 17. Kemar Burrowes (16), Corey Lamkin (13) and Thomas Bailey rounded at the quartet.

Like the Hornets, the Islanders also shot well from the floor. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was 31-of-57 overall (.544) but was just 3-for-7 from three-point range. The Islanders were also able to outrebound Sacramento State, 31-28.

The biggest difference came at the free-throw line where the Hornets made 20 of their 27 attempts. Conversely, Corpus Christi got to the line 24 times and made 15.

Sacramento State ends its seven-game road trip at Eastern Washington on Saturday, Jan. 18. The game against the Eagles will start at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on KTKZ 1380 AM and www.hornetsports.com.
