SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- David Schroeder scored a team-high 15 points and Jeremy Brown recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to help Idaho State hold on for a 67-62 victory Thursday night at the Hornet Nest.
The win improved the Bengals to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets fell to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in league action.
Idaho State shot .447 (17-38) from the floor in the first half while Sacramento State was a dismal 7-of-26 (.269). The Bengals also outrebounded the Hornets 26-17 in the half and had 12 assists compared the Sacramento State’s four to lead 41-22 at intermission.
ISU continued to build on its large lead early in the second period. Brown buried a three with 15:00 minutes remaining to give Idaho State a 59-33 lead. From that point, Sacramento State went on a 22-0 run and scored 27 of the next 29 points.
The Hornets pulled within four, 59-55 after a layup by Raashad Hooks with 6:37 left. ISU answered with a bucket from Marquis Poole before Chris Lange responded with a layup and Brandon Guyton made the score 61-60 with a three-pointer at the 2:17 mark.
Brown added cushion to the ISU lead with a pair of free throws and Guyton’s three-point try rimmed out ending the hopes of a Hornet comeback.
Sacramento State improved its shooting in the second half (14-38) but still ended the game 21-of-64 (.328). Jimmy White led the team with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Hooks added 11 points.
Poole (14) and Rashaad Kirkland (12) joined Schroeder and Brown in double figures for the Bengals. All 15 of Schroeder’s points came on three-pointers.
Sacramento State will return to the Hornet Nest on Saturday, Jan. 25, against Weber State. The Wildcats are currently 3-0 in the Big Sky.
