FRESNO, Calif. --- Jonathan Woods led four Fresno State players in double figures with 28 points to help the Bulldogs to a convincing 91-53 victory over Sacramento State Sunday night at Selland Arena.
The win improved Fresno State to 7-2 overall and kept the team undefeated at home. The Hornets dropped to 4-7 and suffered their fourth-consecutive defeat.
Woods made 13 of his 19 field goal attempts, including a three-pointer, and added one free throw for his game-high effort. The junior also grabbed nine rebounds and recorded two blocks and one steal.
Guard Travis DeManby made 4-of-6 threes for his 13 points, Hiram Fuller added 13 points off the bench and Renaldo Major tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to complete the quartet of double-digit scorers.
After trailing, 5-0, Sacramento State tied the game on a layup and three-pointer by Brandon Guyton. The Hornets eventually led, 10-8, before Fresno State went on a 10-0 run to take control of the contest. Sacramento State responded with four points only to see the Bulldogs record an 18-0 spurt to claim a 36-14 advantage en route to a 42-17 halftime lead.
Fresno State used a ferocious half-court trap to force the Hornets into 14 turnovers in the opening period. The Bulldogs also attacked the glass, outrebounding Sacramento State 26-13 in the first half. Twelve of the team’s 26 boards came on the offensive end compared to just three for the Hornets.
Sacramento State doubled its first-half performance with 36 points in the second period. The team ended the game 19-of-56 overall and just 3-of-23 from three-point range.
Fresno State was 34-for-68 and outrebounded the Hornets, 53-23.
Derek Lambeth and Jimmy White led the Hornet offense with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Lambeth also guided the team with six rebounds.
Sacramento State will continue its seven-game road trip at Lipscomb on Jan. 4. The game will start at 5:05 p.m. PST and can be heard on KTKZ 1380 AM.
