SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State men’s basketball team opened its 2001-02 season with a 128-84 exhibition win over Tribe Called Sweat Saturday evening at Hornet Gym.Sophomore forward Cedric Thompkins and junior forward Leo Cravey led the Hornets in scoring with 21 points, respectively, as five players finished the game with double-figure scoring. Thompkins who finished the contest shooting 8-of-11 from the field including 5-of-8 from the line also led the team with a game-high ten rebounds. Senior guard Rene Jacques (15), junior guard Joel Jones (14) and junior forward Derek Lambeth (13) rounded out the Hornets in double-figure scoring. Senior point guard Ronnie Walton also chipped in 12 assists. TCS was led in scoring by Roman Rivera with 17.
After falling behind 8-7 in the early minutes, Sacramento State never relinquished the lead as the Hornets kept their advantage in double figures after the 10:19 mark in the first half. The Hornets went on an 18-9 run to take a 50-34 halftime advantage.
The Hornets shot .676 (46-68) from the field, .500 (10-20) from three-point range and .765 (26-34) from the free-throw line.
Sacramento State will play its final exhibition of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7:05 p.m. at Hornet Gym before opening the regular season on the road at the Guardians Classic in Memphis, Tenn., on Nov. 13-14.
