SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Five Hornets had at least 15 points, led by junior Angel Alamo’s game-high 22 and sophomore Loren Leath’s 20, as Sacramento State defeated Warner Pacific, 105-84, in men’s basketball exhibition action Friday evening at the Hornets Nest. The exhibition was the first of the season for both teams as Warner Pacific, an NAIA team from Portland, Ore., plays at Gonzaga tomorrow. Sacramento State, which hit the century mark three times last year, scored 60 first-half points and 45 more in the second half.
The Hornets shot 55.6 percent (40-72) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-14) from the three-point line and 63.3 percent (19-30) from the free-throw line. A glaring problem last year, Sacramento State was able to control the glass, outrebounding Warner Pacific, 43-29.
Alamo, who scored 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting a week ago in the annual Green-Gold scrimmage, again was proficient from the field. Tonight, the transfer from Riverside Community College shot 8-of-9 from the field, and added seven rebounds and three steals. Alamo started at center and played 26 minutes. Leath, who was an honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference selection last season, knocked down 8-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc.
Sacramento State’s defense tallied five blocked shots and 12 steals, including a game-high five from junior point guard Roderick Adams. A transfer from Texas’ Collin County Community College, Adams was another newcomer who looked good in the scrimmage a week ago. He did not disappoint in tonight’s exhibition either, finishing with 16 points (6-of-10 shooting), nine assists, three rebounds and the five steals.
Rounding out the Hornets with double-figure points were senior Alex Bausley (15) and junior Davon Roberts (15). A first team all-Big Sky selection last season, Bausley shot 6-of-12 from the field while adding a team-high eight rebounds to go along with three steals. Roberts finished the game 6-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line while also chipping in six rebounds.
The game remained tight through the first 3:39, before the Hornets used a 13-2 run to open up a 20-9 lead with 14:03 left in the first half. Warner Pacific closed to within nine points (25-16) at the 11:40 mark of the first half, but Alamo answered with a pair of free throws and the Hornets led by double figures the rest of the game. Sacramento State led by as many as 37 points midway through the second half.
The Knights were paced by Jalonta Martin’s 20 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Scott O’Gallagher, who is a transfer from Big Sky rival Portland State, added 17 points and three rebounds.
Sacramento State plays its final exhibition game on Monday, Nov. 6, at home against San Diego Christian at 7:05 p.m. The Hornets open regular-season play at home against Bethany on Friday, Nov. 10 (7:35 p.m.) before hopping on the road and playing New Mexico two days later on Nov. 12.
