MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO UTAH VALLEY STATE

12/3/2005

OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley State’s Russell Wesley sank a 28-foot shot to send Saturday night''s game against Sacramento State into overtime and then came up with a crucial rebound to help secure a 71-69 victory for the Wolverines in a non-conference men’s basketball game.

With time running out in regulation and Sacramento State (4-3) leading 62-59, Wesley launched the long three-point shot (0:06) that sent the game into overtime.

The Hornets had a six-point lead with 45 seconds remaining, but missed opportunities to put the game away when both Haron Hargrave (0:45) and DaShawn Freeman (0:27) missed the front end of 1-and-1 free throw opportunities. Freeman and Hargrave had just combined to go 8-for-8 from the line down the stretch of Wednesday’s victory over UC Davis.

After Wesley knocked down the three-pointer, the Hornets had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Clark Woods’ desperation three-point attempt fell off the mark.

Near the end of overtime and with the Wolverines clinging to a 71-69 lead, Hargrave drove the lane and threw up a wild shot that missed. Several players tipped the loose ball before Wesley finally corralled the rebound with 7.3 seconds left.

The game ended with the Hornets getting one last chance after Wesley was fouled and missed both free throws, but Hargrave missed an attempt as the buzzer sounded.

With the loss, Sacramento State had its three-game winning streak snapped and two of the team’s three losses have now come by three points or less. The Hornets’ 4-3 mark is still the team’s best start to a season since the 2002-03 squad was also 4-3. Utah Valley State is now 3-0 at home this season and 15-1 on its home floor dating back to last year.

Sacramento State led 29-21 at halftime, and opened up a lead as large as 17 points (41-24) in the second half after Alex Bausley knocked down a jumper with 16:50 remaining. However, the Wolverines responded with a 15-0 run over the next 5:41 to close the gap to two points (41-39) with 11:09 left. After a jumper from Chris Lange ended the run, the Hornets would not relinquish the lead until Wesley’s three-pointer at the end of regulation. In fact, Sacramento State held the lead from the 15:05 mark of the first half all the way until Wesley’s three-pointer.

Freeman led the Hornets with 17 points and five assists, but the point guard fouled out with 2:19 remaining in overtime. Sacramento State would score just three points the rest of the way. Joining Freeman in double figures for the Hornets were senior Jason Harris (13 points, six rebounds), Hargrave (12 points, team-high seven rebounds) and junior Clark Woods (season-high tying 12 points).

Sacramento State outshot Utah Valley State (.448-.371) from the field, but the Hornets turned the ball over 14 times and converted seven less free throws (UVS: 20-for-28; SAC: 13-for-17). The Hornets knocked down a season-low four three-pointers, and went 4-of-14 (.286) from beyond the arc, snapping a string of four-straight games of shooting better than 44.0 percent from the three-point line.

Matt Peterson led Utah Valley State with 17 points. Heck added 15 for the Wolverines, and center Ben Devoe had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Wesley tallied nine points and six rebounds.

The Hornets, who have played at home just once in their first seven games of the season, return to the friendly confines on Monday, Dec. 5, as the team hosts Long Beach State at 7:35 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader as the Sacramento State women host Gonzaga at 5 p.m.
