SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by freshman Loren Leath’s game-high 19 points, as the Sacramento State men’s basketball squad cruised to a 100-61 victory over William Jessup Tuesday evening at the Hornets Nest. The game marked Sacramento State’s home opener as the team has now won seven home openers in a row.Sacramento State, which improved to 2-2 with the victory, reached the century mark in points for the 53rd time in school history and first time since the team posted 110 at Northern Arizona on Feb. 7, 2004. Leath, who had missed the team’s first three games of the season with a skin infection, shot 7-of-14 from the field, including a game-high five three-pointers in 11 attempts. The freshman also added four assists and three rebounds for a Sacramento State team that shot 52.0 percent (39-75) from the field, 44.4 percent (12-27) from beyond the three-point arc, and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the free-throw line.
William Jessup, an NAIA school from Rocklin, Calif., dropped to 2-2 with the loss and was forced into 29 turnovers. The Warriors shot 40.0 percent (22-55) from the field, but were outrebounded, 49-27, and limited to just 24 second-half points. Sacramento State (24 assists, 19 steals as a team) finished one assist and two steals shy of the school records.
Leath, who played two games for Los Angeles Valley Junior College last year before suffering an Achilles injury and gaining a redshirt season, scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half (all 12 points coming on three-pointers). Sacramento State senior DaShawn Freeman finished with 18 points and game highs in both assists (10) and steals (five). The Oakland, Calif., native is now averaging 14.3 points, 6.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Freeman’s five steals gives him 212 for his career, which sets the new Sacramento State career record for steals, previously held by Pat Wallace (210 steals from 1989-93).
Joining Leath and Freeman in double figures for Sacramento State were junior Haron Hargrave (15 points, 5-of-11 shooting, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc) and senior Jason Harris (12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 20 minutes). Twelve different Hornets scored at least two points, including eight from Big Sky Conference Player of the Week Alex Bausley, who played just seven minutes and shot 4-of-4 from the field. In addition, all 13 Hornets on the active roster pulled down at least one rebound and played at least seven minutes.
William Jessup’s largest lead of the contest was one point after Torben Seikowsky knocked down a three-pointer to give the Warriors a 16-15 lead with 12:47 remaining in the first half. However, the Hornets immediately responded with a 10-2 run (including a pair of three-pointer by Hargrave) to reclaim the lead at 25-18 with 11:25 to play. The Hornets would never lead by anything less than five points the rest of the way, and had a double-digit lead for the final 28:29 of the contest. In fact, Sacramento State led by at least 20 points for the final 14:55 of the game.
The Warriors had three players score in double figures, comprised of Joseph Mitchell (team-high 17 points and seven rebounds), Seikowsky (11 points) and Brett Swarts (10 points, team-high four assists). William Jessup shot 50.0 percent (13-26) from the field in the first half, but were limited to 31.0 percent (9-29) in the second half.
