MEN'S BASKETBALL PUTS SCARE IN NO. 22 NEVADA, BUT FALL 82-74
RENO, Nev. — Nevada All-American forward Nick Fazekas scored 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as 22nd-ranked Nevada survived an early scare and a late charge by Sacramento State on its way to an 82-74 victory over the Hornets.Sacramento State’s Alex Bausley matched Fazekas point for point, posting a career-best 28 points while draining 6-of-11 three pointers and pulling down a team-high six rebounds.
The hot-shooting Hornets, 1-2 on the year, jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game behind three pointers by Bausley and junior Haron Hargrave, and a basket and free throw by senior Jason Harris. Sacramento State held onto the lead for much of the first half until a 10-0 run late in the period put the Wolf Pack up, 27-22.
A Harris baseline jumper with 3:02 remaining in the first half helped Sacramento State regain the lead (30-29), but four free throws by Nevada’s Chad Bell and Fazekas over the final three minutes of the period put the Wolfpack up, 33-30, at the intermission.
The Wolf Pack, 1-0 on the year, took control of the game early in the second period, extending their lead to 40-30 (17:48) until a pair of Bausely free throws ended a scoring drought for the Hornets.
Nevada continued its torrid shooting early in the second period and led by as much as 23 points (58-35) with 10:27 to play. Bausley caught fire from three-point range at that point to pull the Hornets to within seven points (66-59) with 4:48 to go in the contest. During that five-plus minute span, Bausley drained four three pointers and Chris Lange had one trey to draw the Hornets back in the game.
After Bausley''s three-pointer cut the lead to 66-59, Nevada quickly reponded with a Fazekas jumper and the Wolf Pack never led by anything less than seven points the rest of the way.
Joining Bausley in double figures for the Hornets were Hargrave (14 points, two steals) and senior DaShawn Freeman (13 points, eight assists and four steals). Harris finished with seven points, two assists and one steal.
Sacramento State was whistled for 27 fouls during the contest compared to just 14 called on Nevada. The Wolf Pack took advantage, knocking down 29-of-38 free throws (76.3 percent) while the Hornets converted on 13-of-19 free throws (68.4 percent).
The Hornets were outrebounded, 45-33, but were able to stay in the game behind a season-best 11 three-pointers. The Wolf Pack shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field and were forced into 19 turnovers.
Sacramento State returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22, as it takes on William Jessup in the home opener. Tipoff for Tuesday’s game in the Hornets Nest is set for 7:05 p.m. The Hornets have won each of their last six home openers.
