SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State sophomore Loren Leath scored a career-high tying 28 points and senior Haron Hargrave added 22 to lead the Hornets to a 100-77 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday evening at the Hornets Nest.In the 105th meeting between the two teams, the Hornets jumped out to a 7-3 lead and never trailed the rest of the way, opening up a lead as large as 29 points late in the second half. In fact, Sacramento State, which shot 46.8 percent (36-77) from the field and forced the Aggies (0-5) into 30 turnovers, led by double figures the final 33:24 of the contest.
With the victory, the Hornets improved to 4-3 overall and strengthened their lead in the all-time series over UC Davis to 61-44. In addition, Sacramento State picked up 10 points in the Causeway Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the Hornets and Aggies. UC Davis now leads in the Cup, 26.67-25.00, with the next competition coming when the two women’s basketball teams meet on Dec. 10. The Hornets won last year’s Causeway Cup, outscoring the Aggies, 66.25-38.75.
Joining Leath and Hargrave in double figures for Sacramento State were senior Alex Bausley (13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals) and junior Angel Alamo (12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots). Leath, who just set his career high with 28 points against William Jessup on Wednesday, matched that figure tonight by shooting 10-of-21 from the field and 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point line. The Oakland native is now averaging a team-best 18.6 points per game.
In a contest that featured a combined 47 turnovers and 54 fouls, both teams played up-tempo ball from start to finish. Sacramento State, which entered the game first in the Big Sky with an average of 12.2 steals per game, improved that mark with 15 more tonight. In fact, eight different Hornets had steals, led by Hargrave’s three swipes. Hargrave, who went 7-of-7 from the free throw line and added six rebounds, is now averaging 18.0 points in four games.
Sacramento State converted on 18-of-27 attempts (66.7 percent) from the free throw line and 16 of the team’s 41 rebounds came on the offensive glass, including a game-high five from Alamo.
The Hornets went into halftime with a 45-29 lead and immediately extended that lead to 23 points (61-38) with 15:34 left on an Alamo putback. The Hornets led by at least 20 points the rest of the way as the team scored its 100th point with 44 seconds remaining on an alley-oop pass from Hargrave that Jason Davis emphatically dunked.
Sacramento State also finished the game with 11 blocked shots, its most since tallying 11 against Butler on Dec. 27, 1993. Junior Justin Williams, who entered the game ranked fifth in the Big Sky in blocked shots, had a career-high four. Joining Williams in the block party for the Hornets were junior Davon Roberts (3), Alamo (2) and Davis (2).
UC Davis shot just 38.1 percent (24-63) from the field as Ari Warmerdam led all scorers with 16 points. Point guard Rommel Marentez added 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, but was also forced into nine turnovers. The Aggies shot just 26.7 percent (8-30) from beyond the three-point line.
Sacramento State will now play six of its next seven games on the road, beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Illinois State at 5:05 p.m. PST. The Hornets will also play Louisville next week on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 4:05 p.m. PST. The Louisville game was originally scheduled for 10:05 a.m. PST, but was moved to a 4:05 p.m. PST start time.
