LEATH’S CAREER HIGH 28 POINTS LEADS MEN’S BASKETBALL TO VICTORY OVER WILLIAM JESSUP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State sophomore Loren Leath scored a career-high 28 points and junior Angel Alamo added his first career double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) to lead the Hornets to a 93-58 victory over William Jessup in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday evening at the Hornets Nest.

With the win, Sacramento State improved to 3-3 this season, and 2-1 at home. The Hornets will conclude their brief two-game homestand this Saturday, Nov. 25, when the team hosts UC Davis at 7:05 p.m. for the basketball version of the Causeway Classic. With the loss, William Jessup, which is an NAIA team from Rocklin, Calif., dropped to 2-5.

Sacramento State led the game from start to finish as senior Haron Hargrave opened the contest with a three-pointer. After Joseph Mitchell’s jumper drew the Warriors within two points (8-6), the Hornets went on a 12-3 run, which included four points from Alex Bausley and Leath, two from Alamo and two from junior Roderick Adams.

Sacramento State never led by anything less than six points the rest of the way as the Hornets built a lead as large as 38 points in the second half. The Hornets outscored William Jessup, 40-23, in the first half and 53-35 in the second half.

The Hornets shot 47.2 percent (34-72) from the field, 33.3 percent (8-24) from the three-point line and a season-best 81.0 percent (17-21) from the free-throw line. Sacramento State outrebounded William Jessup, 45-33, and limited the Warriors to 35.2 percent (19-54) shooting from the field.

All 11 active players for the Hornets got in the scoring column, as Leath’s 28 points surpassed his previous career high of 26, set last year against Idaho State. The Oakland native shot 11-of-20 from the field, including a career-high tying six three-pointers in 13 attempts. Leath is now averaging 17.0 points per game this season after being named honorable mention all-Big Sky last year as a freshman.

Alamo, who has at least seven rebounds in all but game this season, finished 5-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. The Brooklyn native also had game highs in both steals (3) and blocked shots (3). Alamo is now averaging 9.0 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game while shooting 90.9 percent (10-11) from the free throw line.

Joining Leath and Alamo in double figures for the Hornets was Hargrave, who finished with 12 points, three assists and a steal. Four Hornets had at least six rebounds, comprised of Alamo, junior Justin Williams (seven points, six rebounds), sophomore Donald Thomas (seven points, six rebounds, one steal) and junior Curtis Harrison (three points, six rebounds, one blocked shot). Adams finished with four points, four rebounds, eight assists, two blocked shots and a steal.

Bausley, who had scored at least 12 points in every game prior to tonight, finished with seven points and two rebounds in just 15 minutes.

William Jessup, which had three players foul out late in the second half, was led by Matt Kristoff’s 14 points, and Mitchell’s 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Sacramento State and UC Davis resume their long-standing rivalry on Saturday. The Hornets own a 61-40 all-time record against the Aggies, including a 72-67 victory last season in Davis.The rivalry is the longest for Sacramento State against any team.
