MEN’S BASKETBALL PUTS EARLY SCARE INTO NO. 17 WASHINGTON BEFORE FALLING, 83-74

11/19/2006

SEATTLE -- Sacramento State senior Alex Bausley finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven steals, and the Hornets led by as many as 13 points midway through the first half before eventually falling to 17th ranked Washington, 83-74, in a non-conference men’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at the Bank of America Arena.

In a game that was broadcasted live on Fox Sports Northwest, the Hornets opened the contest by scoring 29 of the game’s first 45 points, as a jumper from junior Roderick Adams gave Sacramento State a 29-16 lead with 10:01 to play. During the run, six different Hornets scored points, including eight each from Bausley and sophomore Loren Leath. However, Washington closed the final 9:21 of the first half on a 32-9 run, as Quincy Pondexter scored 11 of his game-high 22 points during the run. The Huskies went into the break with a 48-38 lead and led by at least nine points during the entire second half.

With the victory, Washington, which is ranked No. 15 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and 17th in the Associated Press poll, improved to 4-0. Sacramento State dropped to 2-3 as the team concluded its brief two-game road trip which included a 74-53 victory at Denver on Friday night.

Despite shooting just 35.4 percent (29-82) from the field, 19.0 percent (4-21) from beyond the arc, and 63.2 percent (12-19) from the free throw line, Sacramento State was able to stay in the game by forcing Washington into 24 turnovers. In fact, the Hornets had 12 steals, as Bausley finished with seven, breaking his previous careser high of six. Bausley, who was a first team all-Big Sky selection last year, is now averaging 16.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.4 steals per game while shooting 52.4 percent (33-63) from the field this year.

Sacramento State attempted 23 more shots (82-59) from the field than Washington, but the Huskies were proficient in their field goal attempts, shooting 54.2 percent (32-59). In addition, the Huskies outrebounded the Hornets, 50-38. Of Sacramento State’s 38 rebounds, exactly half (19) came on the offensive glass, including six offensive boards from junior forward Davon Roberts and five from Bausley.

Washington opened up a lead as large as 17 points in the second half, but Sacramento State closed the game on a 9-1 run to lose by nine points. Joining Bausley in double figures for the Hornets were Leath (17 points) and freshman point guard Alonzo Young’s season-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

After scoring 31 points in his first game of the season Friday at Denver, Sacramento State combo guard Haron Hargrave finished with seven points, three rebounds and three assists in today’s game. Roberts had six points and six rebounds, and junior Justin Williams had six points and five rebounds before fouling out of the game with 2:30 to play.

Washington had just three players with more than seven points, comprised of Pondexter (22 points, nine rebounds), seven-foot freshman center Spencer Hawes (14 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field) and Jon Brockman (13 points, nine rebounds). Ten different Huskies were forced into at least one turnover during the game.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, the team’s deadliest outside shooter (Leath) could not find his range again today, finishing the game 6-of-23 from the field and 3-of-13 from beyond the arc. Since the second game of the season at New Mexico, Leath is now shooting just 29.0 percent (20-69) while taking nearly 25 percent of the team’s shots over that span.

Sacramento State dropped to 0-9 against ranked opposition since joining the Div. I ranks in 1991-92.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 22, when they face their second and final non-Div. I team on the schedule (William Jessup) at 7:05 p.m. Sacramento State defeated the Warriors, 100-61, at home last season.
