HARGRAVE'S CAREER NIGHT LEADS MEN'S BASKETBALL TO A 74-53 WIN AT DENVER

11/17/2006

DENVER --- Senior Haron Hargrave scored a career-high 31 points to lead Sacramento State to a 74-53 win over Denver Friday night in a men''s basketball game at Hamilton Gymnasium.

Hargrave, who was playing in his first game of the season, finished the contest 11-of-17 from the field, including 8-of-10 from three-point range. His eight three-pointers tied the school record, held by Jameel Pugh and Charlo Davis.

The win evened the Hornets’ record at 2-2 while the Pioneers dropped to 0-3.

Trailling, 34-27, at halftime, Sacramento State scored the first 10 points of the second half behind two three-pointers and a jumper from Hargrave, as well as a layup from senior Alex Bausley. The Hornets stretched their run to 32-5, and eventually led 56-38 with just over 11 minutes to play. During the stretch, Hargrave scored 11 of the team’s 32 points.

The two teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes but Sacramento State closed the game on a 9-4 run.

The first half saw six ties and seven lead changes. With the scored tied, 10-10, Hargrave gave the team a three-point edge with the first of his eight three-pointers. Back-to-back hoops by Tyler Bullock gave the lead back to DU before junior Roderick Adams converted a jumper to make the score 18-17 with 8:13 to play in the half.

The Pioneers took a 21-20 lead before Hargrave made a layup, sophomore Loren Leath knocked down a three, and junior Angel Alamo made 1-of-2 free throws to give Sacramento State a 26-21 advantage. However, momentum quickly turned back to Denver as the Pioneers scored 11-unanswered points to take an eight-point lead (34-26) with 2:39 left. Neither team made a field goal for the remainder of the half and Bausley’s lone free throw concluded the scoring for the opening period.

Hargrave was joined in double figures by Leath (15) and Bausley (12). As a team, the Hornets shot 27-of-68 (39.7 percent) and were 11-of-25 (.440) from three-point range and 9-of-18 from the free-throw line. Alamo collected 13 rebounds to lead the team and Sacramento State added 16 steals and three blocked shots to help the cause.

Denver was led by 11 points from Bullock and Antonio Porch. Joseph Jackson matched Alamo for the game high with 13 rebounds. As a team, the Pioneers were 19-of-51 (37.3 percent) overall, 4-of-15 from long range, and 11-of-17 at the stripe.

Sacramento State will continue its road trip on Saturday as it travels to Seattle to take on 17th-ranked Washington. The game against the Huskies will tip off at 1 p.m. and can be heard solely on hornetsports.com.

NOTES: The margin of victory marked the largest for Sacramento State on the road since the team moved to Div. I in 1991-92. The last road win with a larger margin came on Nov. 30, 1989, in a 100-76 win at Cal Lutheran…Hargrave’s previous career highs were 19 points, five field goals and four three pointers…senior Clark Woods did not play in the game due to a knee injury…Sacramento State collected just four of its 74 points from the bench. Alonzo Young and Jason Davis (two points each) were the only reserves to score. Both, however, collected their field goals on second-half dunks…seven of the 11 Hornets recorded a steal in the game…Bausley led the team with five steals, one shy of his career high.
