CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Four Oregon State players tallied double figures – led by J.S. Nash’s 15 points – as the Beavers cruised to an 86-59 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday evening at Gill Coliseum.Sasa Cuic (14), David Lucas (13) and Marcel Jones (11) joined Nash in double figures as Oregon State shot 44.6 percent (29-65) from the field while limiting the Hornets to a 32.4 (22-68) field-goal percentage. The Beavers also shot 81.5 percent (22-27) from the free-throw line while forcing Sacramento State into 18 turnovers.
With the victory, Oregon State improved to 8-3 overall and 4-0 at home. The Beavers, who also defeated the Hornets in Corvallis last season and in Sacramento in 2002-03, have won four straight and six of their last seven. Sacramento State dropped to 2-9 and 0-7 on the road.
Sacramento State was limited to just five points during the first nine minutes of the game as Oregon State jumped out to a 21-5 lead at the 11:50 mark of the first half. The Hornets shot just 2-of-11 from the field and committed five turnovers during that span as the Beavers jumped out to the large lead. A three-pointer from Alex Bausley brought the Hornets back within 13 points (24-11) with 8:09 remaining in the first half, but that was as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the night.
Oregon State added a 14-2 run during a four-minute span late in the first half and entered halftime with a 42-19 lead. Bausley led the Hornets with seven points in the first half while Chris Stephens had eight points and four rebounds during the first stanza for Oregon State.
Sacramento State began the second half on a 12-5 run (capped by a jumper from Jameel Pugh) to close within 16 points (47-31) with 15:14 left in the contest. However, Oregon State responded by scoring the next seven points unanswered to reclaim a 23-point lead (54-31) with 12:58 left. Sacramento State would get no closer than within 18 points the rest of the way as the 27-point victory for Oregon State matched its largest lead of the night.
Bausley was the only Hornet in double figures (13 points) as the sophomore also finished with four rebounds in a team-high 31 minutes. Junior DaShawn Freeman added nine points, five assists and a career-high tying eight rebounds. The eight rebounds led Sacramento State as the Hornets were outrebounded, 46-43. Senior E.J. Harris recorded eight points (4-of-7 shooting), two assists and two steals in 24 minutes.
The freshmen play for Sacramento State continued its season-long trend of improvement as forwards Davon Roberts (seven points, 3-of-6 shooting, five rebounds and one steal in 16 minutes) and Randy Adams (six points, 3-of-5 shooting, five rebounds and an assist in 16 minutes) both played well. In his most action (21 minutes) since rejoining the team after sitting out three games with a stress fracture, Pugh finished with three points (2-of-11 shooting) and one rebound.
For Oregon State, Cuic (seven), Lamar Hurd (seven) and Nick DeWitz (six) each finished with at least six rebounds. DeWitz added five points, one steal and a game-high tying three blocked shots.
Sacramento State returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 20, as the team welcomes Utah Valley State to the Hornets Nest for a 7:05 p.m. tip-off. The Hornets are 2-2 at home this season, including a 22-point victory over Great Falls last Wednesday.
GAME NOTES -- After being outscored, 42-19, in the first half, Sacramento State was outscored by just four points (44-40) in the second half...with five assists, Freeman moved into first place in Sacramento State’s Div. I record book (1991-pres.) with 246 career assists. The point guard is also first in Div. I history in steals (156)...junior Jason Harris finished with six points, marking the first time all season in which the swingman did not score at least nine points...all 11 players on Sacramento State’s active roster played in tonight’s game.
