SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- UC Davis scored the last 12 points of regulation, took its first lead of the contest in overtime, and eventually defeated Sacramento State in the extra session, 72-63, in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday evening in front of a sellout crowd at the Hornets Nest.The Aggies, who held the Hornets scoreless during the final 6:30 of regulation, shot 4-of-4 from the field (including a three-pointer) and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in overtime. Conversely, the Hornets, who never trailed in the contest until the 4:02 mark of overtime, went 0-of-9 from the field in the extra session.
UC Davis (2-1) overcame a 14-point halftime deficit (29-15) as the Aggies knocked down 50.0 percent (7-14) of their three-point attempts in the second half and limited the Hornets to a 30.8 field-goal percentage in the second stanza. The Aggies’ Ryan Moore had six points in overtime and Fowzi Abdelsamad added five of his team-high 21 points in the extra session as the Hornets went ice cold from the field.
During the final 6:30 of regulation, Sacramento State (1-3) went 0-of-6 from the floor, 0-of-1 from the free-throw line and committed four turnovers to let UC Davis back into the game. Prior to the Aggies’ late surge, Sacramento State had never led by anything less than five points during the entire second half. Sacramento State’s 14-point halftime lead was also the team’s largest of the game.
After Thomas Juillerat hit a free throw and JaQay Carlyle knocked down a jumper to close the Aggie deficit to five points (56-51) with 3:45 to play, no team scored for the next 2:24. After turnovers on three-consecutive possessions by the Hornets, a pair of free throws by Rommel Marentez narrowed the Hornet lead to three points (56-53) with 1:21 remaining in the contest. A three-pointer by Marentez tied things at 56-56 with 37 seconds left in regulation. In fact, Marentez scored seven of the team’s final 10 points of the second half. The Hornets had the last possession of regulation, but DaShawn Freeman’s runner in the lane fell off the mark with four seconds remaining.
The Hornets and Aggies exchanged points during the first two minutes of the extra session before a free throw from Jameel Pugh gave the Sacramento State a one-point advantage (61-60) with 2:36 left. Abdelsamad responded with a three-pointer at the 2:08 mark and UC Davis never trailed again the rest of the way.
Sacramento State junior Jason Harris posted a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds while Pugh (12 points) rounded out the Hornets in double figures. Harris went 13-of-14 from the free-throw line and eight of his 11 rebounds were on the offensive glass. Junior DaShawn Freeman added seven points, nine assists and seven steals as the Hornets finished the game with 14 steals.
The Hornets concluded the contest shooting 29.7 percent (19-64) from the field as one player (Aaron Perry 3-of-4) shot better than 50.0 percent from the floor. Sacramento State knocked down seven three-pointers (7-of-28), including three from sophomore Alex Bausley.
Marentez (18 points) joined Abdelsamad in double figures for UC Davis as the Aggies shot 81.5 percent (22-of-27) from the free-throw line during the game. Seven different UC Davis players had at least four rebounds, led by Carlyle’s eight. The Aggies outrebounded the Hornets, 43-38, and finished the game shooing 42.0 percent (21-50) from the field.
Sacramento State, which will try to avoid its first 1-4 start since the 2001-02 season, next travels to UC Irvine on Saturday, Dec. 4, for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff.
