THOMPKINS AND GUYTON LEAD THE WAY AS MEN’S HOOPS NOTCHES FIRST BIG SKY WIN

1/15/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior Cedric Thompkins scored a season-high 19 points and senior Brandon Guyton chipped in a season-high tying 16 as Sacramento State recorded its first Big Sky Conference victory of the season, defeating Portland State, 76-64, in a men’s basketball game Thursday evening at the Hornets Nest.

Thompkins, who went 9-of-13 from the floor, was two points shy of his career high as the power forward also recorded five rebounds and two blocked shots. Guyton went 6-of-10 from the floor, including four assists, two steals and a game-high four three-pointers. The Hornets shot 45.9 percent (28-61) from the floor (their third-best output of the season) while also going 7-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc.

With the victory, Sacramento State improved to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Big Sky. The Hornets also won for the sixth time in eight games at home this season. Portland State dropped to 7-9 and 1-2 in the conference.

Sacramento State broke open a tie game by going on a 13-3 run over a three-minute span in the second half to take a 50-40 lead with 12:52 remaining in the game. A vicious dunk by senior Joel Jones capped the run as the Hornets never led by anything less than nine points the rest of the way.

The Hornets forced 15 Portland State turnovers as sophomore DaShawn Freeman recorded a game-high three steals. Jones tallied eight points, five rebounds and three assists before fouling out with 55 seconds remaining in the contest. Senior E.J. Harris had eight points, five rebounds and one steal while freshman Alex Bausley had a game-high tying six rebounds despite playing just nine minutes.

Portland State shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor, but went just 11-for-19 (57.9 percent) from the free-throw line. The Vikings, who were trailing, 30-26, at halftime, recorded only one steal during the entire game while allowing Sacramento State 46 points in the second half. Antone Jarrell led all players with 20 points as the junior forward went 9-of-13 from the field. Seamus Boxley added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Neither team led by more than four points during the entire first half as both teams exchanged baskets throughout the stanza. Portland State took its largest lead of the game at 22-18 with four minutes remaining. Sacramento State, however, responded with an 8-0 run as Thompkins scored four of the team’s eight points. Another Thompkins lay-up with 55 seconds remaining gave the Hornets a four-point halftime lead.

Both teams exchanged baskets during the early stages of the second half before the Hornets went on their big run. Sacramento State opened up a game-high 19 point lead (66-47) with 6:07 left in the game before the Vikings ended the contest on a 17-10 run.

The Hornets struggled from the free-throw line (13-22, 59.1 percent) and are now shooting just 57.0 percent (49-86) from the charity stripe over the last three games.

Sacramento State concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday, Jan. 17, against Eastern Washington at 7:05 p.m. Next week, the Hornets travel to conference-foes Idaho State (Thursday, Jan. 22) and Weber State (Saturday, Jan. 24).
