SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Mustangs’ Shane Schilling led all players with 24 points and Sacramento State shot just 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field as Cal Poly defeated the Hornets, 76-60, in a non-conference basketball game Saturday evening at Mott Gymnasium.Almost half of Sacramento State’s 63 field-goal attempts came from beyond the three-point line as the team shot just 6-of-29 (20.7 percent) behind the arc. The Hornets also committed a season-high 27 turnovers, which led to 32 Cal Poly points. Five Hornets finished with at least three turnovers in the contests.
With the victory, the Mustangs improved to 3-2, including victories over Cal and San Jose State. Sacramento State had its three-game winning streak snapped as the Hornets dropped to 3-2. Sacramento State had not lost since its season-opening defeat at the hands of 17th-ranked Stanford.
Schilling, Varnie Dennis (18) and Eric Jackson (10) combined for 52 of Cal Poly’s 76 points as Schilling shot 9-of-16 from the floor and Dennis went 8-of-18. Cal Poly shot 45.5 percent (30-66) from the field as the Mustangs scored 32 points in the paint. Dennis led all players with eight rebounds (including four on the offensive glass) while Schilling added five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.
Tony Champion led the Hornets with 12 points as the senior finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Champion, who also shared the team lead with Chris Lange in rebounds with seven, is now shooting 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the field this season. Senior Joel Jones added 10 points for the Hornets while Brandon Guyton had three three-pointers and nine points for the Hornets. Sophomore DaShawn Freeman finished with six points, eight assists and a career-high seven steals.
Sacramento State jumped out to a 10-2 lead and later extended that lead to nine points (24-15) on a three-pointer from Jones with 8:13 remaining in the half. Cal Poly, however, responded with an 11-0 run, exclamated by a Schilling dunk to give Cal Poly their first lead of the game at 26-24 with 4:54 remaining. The Mustangs, who missed 13 of their first 14 field-goal attempts of the contest, held the Hornets to just three points over the final 8:12 of the first half. Including a string of 11 unanswered points, Cal Poly ended the half on a 21-3 run to take a 36-27 lead into the break.
The Hornets committed 17 first-half turnovers, allowing Cal Poly to score 14 points off those miscues. After Cal Poly missed 13 of its first 14 shots of the first half, the Mustangs converted 13 of their final 21 field-goal attempts of the half. Schilling led all players in the first half with 14 points.
The Mustangs opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 45-29 lead (17:26) before Sacramento State responded with a 13-4 run. A Guyton three-pointer highlighted the run as the Hornets found themselves trailing, 49-42, with 13:31 remaining. Cal Poly, however, answered with a 19-5 run over the next eight minutes to put the game away. Cal Poly opened up a lead as large as 22 points before settling for the 16-point victory.
Sacramento State returns to action this Monday, Dec. 8, as the team travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on the Lobos of New Mexico at The Pit. The Hornets and Lobos have not met since the 1998-99 season when New Mexico posted a 102-71 victory.
