The Hornets and Titans have split four meetings against each other over the last three years, with three of those contests ending in overtime.
After a three-pointer from the Titans’ Yaphett King sent the game into overtime, the Hornets opened the extra frame on a 9-2 run. The run was highlighted by a three-pointer from Guyton, a jumper from E.J. Harris and another three-pointer from Dawson over a 97-second span. A pair of free throws from Bobby Brown got Cal State Fullerton to within four points (75-71) of the Hornet lead with 26 seconds remaining, but the Titans would get no closer the rest of the way.
Sacramento State never trailed during the overtime period and converted 10-of-14 free throws to hold off the Titans.
Dawson led all players with 20 points – including six in overtime – as the senior went 4-of-10 from beyond the three-point line, and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. All seven of Guyton’s shots from the field were three-pointer attempts as the Stockton, Calif., native buried five, including three in the second half and one in overtime. Guyton is now shooting 52.6 percent (10-19) from beyond the arc this season.
Freshman DaShawn Freeman added 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals to round out the Hornet threesome in double figures. Senior Cedric Thompkins had 10 rebounds to lead the Hornets, marking his second-consecutive game with double digits. The Hornets outrebounded the Titans, 41-40, and shot a season-high 70.3 percent (26-37) from the free-throw line.
Both teams shot poorly in the first half (a combined 30.2 percent) as the score was tied at halftime, 24-24. The Titans scored the first four points of the second half, before the Hornets went on a 10-0 run to take a six-point lead (34-28) with 15:30 to play. Sacramento State led for the remainder of the half until King’s three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.
The Titans were led by Pape Sow’s 18 points as the junior shot a game-high 67.7 percent (8-12) from the floor. Brown had 16 points and Brian Pruitt added 11 for Cal State Fullerton, which allowed the Hornets to shoot 60.0 percent (6-10) from the field in the extra session. King led all players with 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Sacramento State returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2, as the team hosts San Jose Christian at 7:05 p.m. at the Hornets Nest. Should the Hornets win that game, their 3-1 start would be the best since the 1999-00 season.
